I go to a private school that's k-12 and I made the h.s. varsity soccer team in 8th grade, but since the season didn't start until the next winter (I live in Florida, so it's always hot here) I decided to run track. Track was a silly sport in my mind
, I figured if you were any kind of real athlete that you would play soccer/basketball or some other real sport. Nonetheless, I decided to do it in order to keep my spot on varsity soccer. The track team at my school was good, so most of the events had already been filled out with veterans as far as state was concerned. I couldn't have made it to state in any sprint/jump, I was just too young. So, I had settled on the idea that pole vault would be my best shot at getting good at something and quick. Turned out, I was right, and it's seems to be working for me!
8th grade
1st @ districts
5th after a jump-off @ regionals where of course top 4 go to state.
Freshman year:
1st @ districts
2nd @ regionals
seeded 3rd for state
where I promptly no-heighted
Sophmore year:
1st @ districts
1st @ regionals (i beat all the guys there too! yay for me!)
1st @ state
WOO HOO!
So now, it's my junior year and I'm a defending state champ and captain of a team in a sport that I used to think was only for the athletes who couldn't cut it at those "real sports"
lol.
I keep vaulting becuase it's objective. If you work harder than someone, more than likely you'll jump higher than them. If you didn't clear a bar, then you can't ever blame the officials for it. I also like it cause you can compare yourself to other vaulters just by saying your PR's.
