Someone else coming off an off-year -- two of them, in fact -- is Modesto favorite Stacy Dragila, the first dominant woman in the pole vault. Now 36, the Auburn (Placer County) native is coming off Achilles tendon and ankle injuries. She won the first two World Championships in women's pole vault in 1999 and 2001 and won the first Olympic gold medal in her event in 2000.
Dragila set a world record 15-9 1/4 at Stanford in 2001 and improved her best to 15-10 in 2004. She had hoped to become the first woman to crack 16 feet (or 4.88 meters), but that distinction went to Russia's Svetlana Feofanova. Since then, countrywoman Yelena Isinbayeva upped the world record to 16-5 1/4 and was the first to top 5.00 meters or 16-4 3/4.
Dragila will be in a field of top Americans, including collegiate record-holder Chelsea Johnson, Mary Sauer and Tracy O'Hara.
The men's vault features 2004 Olympic silver medalist Toby Stevenson, Olympic bronze medalist Derek Miles and Tim Lobinger of Germany.
