Nah, keeping it straight and keeping it 'out' and slightly bent are two different things completely. You want your bottom arm to be out, pushing the pole along with your top hand, you just don't want to lock and block.

its also probably because the pole is way under his body weight. big poles dont do that.

Wow! Sliding down the pole without letting go is the best policy when things go wrong, but what that guy did is still better than letting go completely. Getting launched back down the runway like a missile is still better than falling straight into the box. I'm sure he still ended up with some bumps and bruises to both body and ego, but I doubt he was badly hurt.

The record for a rejection like that in Oklahoma is 36' back down the runway. (Yes, we measured it.) This kid mistook my 16' 190 for his 15' 160. He didn't let go though. That was the day I learned not to ever ignore the factor of sheer stupidity when trying to keep people safe.
