From pigs to percussion, it's at the State Fair
By Rocky Mountain News
August 24, 2007
If you've been looking for a reason to visit Pueblo (and we know you have), we've got one - a little thing called the Colorado State Fair.
That's right, oh fair-deprived citizen: Today through Labor Day, it's time to make the trek southward and revel in the culture of Colorado: 4-H events, racing pigs, rodeos, microbrews, a carnival and roving bands of Wild West entertainers.
Not to mention live sets by big names in pop music, such as Daughtry, Clay Walker, The All-American Rejects and Los Lonely Boys.
Admission
• Fairgrounds tickets are $8 per adult Friday through Sunday, $5 Monday through Thursday. Kids 6 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. Box office hours are 10 a.m.-showtime daily. Ticketed events, including rodeos and concerts, are in addition to fairgrounds admission and vary in cost. Tickets may be purchased at ticketmaster.com or by calling 303-830-8497
Hours
• Grounds are open daily from 10 a.m.-midnight.
This weekend
Events and concerts of note this weekend:
• PRCA Dodge Rodeo: Check out some of the best cowboys in the nation at 6:45 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday in the Budweiser Rodeo Arena. Tickets are $10 on top of admission.
• Recycled Percussion: Take a bunch of guys drumming on whatever they find, add a DJ and the occasional guitar and you get "hip-hop rock" made from scratch. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. today and Sunday, 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Free with admission.
• Foamfest 2007: The good people at the Colorado Institute of Brewing bring you this celebration of Centennial State craft beer, 6-10 p.m. Saturday in the Special Events Tent. Cost is $15 in addition to regular admission.
• Hedrick's Racing Pigs: Professional pig callers and a host of cute hogs constitute one of the fair's favorite family events. Showtimes are 10:30 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. daily. Free with admission.
Upcoming

• Daughtry: From American Idol to rock stardom, Chris Daughtry at the Events Center at the Colorado State Fair. 8 p.m. Wednesday; tickets are $30-$40
• The All-American Rejects: Pop-punk heartthrobs meet southern Colorado. 8 p.m. Sept. 1; tickets are $26-$36
• Fiesta Day: On Sept. 2, the fair's annual celebration of Colorado's Hispanic heritage begins with the Fiesta Parade and ends with live music by Los Lonely Boys and the Doobie Brothers. In between, don't miss the Mexican rodeo, or Celebracion de los Charros. Concert starts at 8 p.m. in the Budweiser Rodeo Arena ($36). Tickets to the Celebracion are $10 on top of admission.

Elite Results - Miles 18'8
1) Derek Miles 5.69 or 18'8"
2) Daniel Ryland 17' 5.18 In full spiderman suit with mask on!
3) Sam Pribyl 17' 5.18
4) Levi Keller 16' 4.88
5) Paul Gensic 16' 4.88
Paul Litchfield NH
Women
Jackie Rodgers 13' 3.96
Elizabeth Stover (HS Senior now) 13' in exhibition so probably doesn't count but it was a real make over a real bar, with room.
Commentary: Derek was awesome and is 'ON". We had a rainstorm after warmups but all the guys and gals were tough and came back strong after a delay. Some great costumes. Daniel had a bullseye on what the crowd wanted at an event like this and was a crowd favorite. Jackie also was great, dressed as a referee and handing out yellow flags after each make, each flag containing a "livestrong" style bracelet that said "Pole vault". These cool bracelets are available from Kevin Opalka. Event was great and all the elites enjoyed a couple days at the ranch riding 4 wheelers, dune buggies, and other ranch fun. Kellie Suttle was the guest announcer for introductions. Good fun!
