Men's track and field announces 2007 freshman class
Two pole vaulters and two middle distance runners to become Hokies this Fall
May 2, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's track and field staff has announced its 2007 recruiting class, which includes a pair of middle distance runners - Eddie Judge and Jeff Miller, and a pair of pole vaulters - Joe Davis and Tim Beierle. All four will become Hokies when classes begin this fall.

Judge, a top middle distance runner from F.W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach, Va., will join the Hokies after becoming a Regional Cross Country Champion this past fall and placing fourth at the Virginia state AAA meet. In 2007, he earned All-America honors by finishing fifth in the 1,600m at the Nike National Indoor Track Championships. He has earned All-State honors three times, and has been a Virginia Regional Champion six times during his high school career. Judge has personal bests of 4:16.28 for the 1,600m, and 9:38.38 for the 3,200m. Judge is an honor student at F.W. Cox and plans to study accounting in the Pamplin School of Business at Virginia Tech. He is the son of Joseph and Katherine Judge of Virginia Beach, Va.

Miller will come to Blacksburg by way of South County Secondary High School in northern Virginia. He has primarily been a middle distance runner, and owns personal bests of 1:52.7 for the 800m, and 2:32.1 for the 1000m. Miller placed third at the Virginia State Indoor Championships in the 1000m, and has been a Northern Regional Champion and District Champion six times. He is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, and plans to study biology at Virginia Tech and eventually go to medical school. He is the son of Jean Miller of Lorton, Va.

Davis, a product of Riverview High School in Sarasota, Fla., will be joining an outstanding group of pole vaulters at Virginia Tech. He was ranked as the top Florida High School Pole Vaulter in 2006 by flrunners.com, and was runner up at the USATF Youth Outdoor Championships in Greensboro, N.C., with a height of 15'5". Davis then cleared a personal best of 15'7" and won the 2006 Ed Wells Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. He is the son of Bob and Amy Davis of Sarasota, Fla., and will study building construction management at Virginia Tech.

Beierle will also join the pole vault crew, and hails from Harrisonburg High School in Harrisonburg, Va. He was the 2007 Virginia AA State Indoor Champion and meet record holder with a height of 15'6", and is currently ranked as the No. 1 pole vaulter in the state with a personal best of 15'7". Beierle has also been selected an All-Region performer as a member of his school's 4x200m and 4x400m relays. Beierle, a member of the National Honor Society, will study engineering at Virginia Tech and is the son of Tom and Brenda Beierle of Harrisonburg, Va.

Vezina commits to Carroll football

Helena Independent Record
May 02, 2007

By IR Staff - 05/02/07

It was announced Tuesday that Dillon Beavers standout Tucker Vezina has committed to play football at Carroll College.

Vezina, a two-time All-State performer at strong safety and running back, was a key player on back-to-back state championship teams for the Beavers. In 2007 Tucker averaged 7.8 yards a carry, gaining 720 yards and scoring 18 touchdowns. He also caught 41 passes for 496 yards and 4 touchdowns.

"Offensively, Tucker was the complete running back. He is an exceptional runner, receiver out of the backfield, and blocker. He is a break away threat every time he touches the ball," said Dillon head coach Terry Thomas.

Career stats include 1,650 yards rushing and 673 yards receiving, scoring 35 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Vezina led the 2007 Beavers with 96 tackles and has totaled 243 in his career. He was also honored as South-Western "A" Co-MVP on defense.

"On defense Tucker was able to make quick reads of opponents' plays and fly sideline to sideline to make the tackle. Tucker is very effective against both the pass and the run," Thomas said.

Vezina was a four-time state placer in wrestling with 119 wins and broke the Dillon High School pole vault record at 14-feet in track and field.

A new 49er

Anna Malone has committed to compete in track and field at UNC Charlotte, her high school coach confirmed last week.Malone, a Parkwood senior, specializes in the pole vault. She expects to compete for the 49ers even though she has not received a scholarship offer, Parkwood coach Bryan Brown said.

Malone has posted a season-high vault of 10 feet, tied for sixth-best in the state.

A vault of 11-6 or 12-0 would likely earn her scholarship money, Brown estimated. Malone has cleared 11-6 in practice this season.

Malone has qualified for the Class 3A Midwest region meet, set for May 5 at Parkwood. She is in her second season competing for the Rebels, after moving with her family from Missouri in December, 2005.

Katrina Rodriguez: A sophomore from Watsonville High, Rodriguez is headed to Division II Chico State, and did in one of the most unlikeliest of ways.
Rodriguez broke the conference record last week in the pole vault by going 11-feet, 3-inches in the championship meet, but that doesn't begin to tell the story.

She caught the attention of Chico State coaches at the Woody Wilson Invitational earlier this year at UC-Davis, when she sailed 11-6.

Making the jump just that much more impressive is the fact Rodriguez came down with a case of food poisoning the night before the meet.

She got sick to her stomach twice on the drive from Salinas to Davis.

"I told all the coaches there, 'I don't think she's going to make it,''' Noble said. "She was sicker than a dog.''

All Rodriguez then did was set a personal best.

"She had her best jump on the worst day of her life,'' Noble said.
