Hate to break it to you, but that was Ice Age 2: The Meltdown -- not Ice Age.

Some commercials:

Buller's Hyundai commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3BoXiUZsJQ
I hadn't seen this before. It's a Japanese commercial for a Gatorade drink, it looks like Daichi Sawano vaults over a wall and kocks a baseball back into play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHMok_YjxIg

Here is my favorite media reference. It is from media that is often overlooked....Literature! In 1912, during the height of Western imperialism and consequent fascination with the wilds of Africa, Edgar Rice Burroughs, created the character Tarzan in "Tarzan of the Apes". He continued with 42 more Tarzan adventures. The following is from the 3rd book, "Son of Tarzan". We join the scene as the young savage attempts to escape the voracious lion Akut.
" Just in front of the lion the boy placed the butt of his spear upon the ground, gave a mighty spring, and, before the bewildered beast could guess the trick that had been played upon him, sailed over the lion's head into the rending embrace of the thorn tree--safe but lacerated..."
{sounds like a European pit}
" Akut had never before seen a pole-vault. Now he leaped up and down within the safety of his own tree, screaming taunts and boasts at the discomfited Numa, while the boy, torn and bleeding, sought some position in his thorny retreat in which he might find the least agony..."
" He took long chances often in his after life; but only when the taking of chances might further the attainment of some cherished end--and, always thereafter, he practiced pole-vaulting."
Surely this inspired some turn of the century lad to pick up a pole in his backyard {Maybe it was Don Bragg}. This was exciting stuff! For a modern day example, play a Jackie Chan movie for a bunch of 12 year olds.
The book I read this in contained only 4 pictures and this scene was one of them. I hope to track it down and scan it.
I found this on a Bourroughs Bio.
" he became an excellent trick rider and crack shot, football quarterback and even did fairly well in his studies"
Sounds like someone who could have been a vaulter. The world may never know...
Sorry, no visually stimulating web link. But the author does well with his words.

Just found this on YouTube. I guess it is some British show called Last of the Summer Wine.
Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z132ZbO1RI
Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JDvn4iP2oc
Part 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2cgUkobf7U
They don't really start pole vaulting until part 2, but the whole thing is pretty funny
