One Legged Pole Vaulter

Unread postby jcoover » Tue Nov 07, 2006 2:52 pm

All I can say is that it is amazing that this kid can go out and have the courage to try an event that most kids with two legs are scared to do. Simply amazing.

lol I actually tried that a while ago. I got 8'6" with a bar, but I think I could go 9'6" on a good day. Completely 1-legged: lifted up my leg before starting down the hopway and tried not to use it in the swing. I even tried tying my leg up with a bungee but it didnt work too well. Very fun.

Amazing and awesome! The obvious aside, he actually does a better job at keeping a straight trail leg than I do. With his lack of speed, he might be a perfect candidate for some old school technique.....and I mean old school. Instead of letting the top hand slide down, he could lower his top hand hold and move his lower hand up to meet the top hand. That would effectively give him a higher grip and allow him to jump a little higher. Even if he never is able to completely grasp the 6:40 model, it's an inspiration to see him jump. Later.........Mike
P.S. I've got to admit that I'm glad it didn't come up under a "critique video please" heading. I'm sure the "elite" coaches would have had a field day with it.

I once talk a girl with one arm how to surf- probably the most satisfying thing i've done in my life...

she did better than most people did with two healthy arms....

So with such a major disability he would have to learn how to swing really well and get a pull through and use all the poles energy so compenstate for not haveing the speed.

So if he learned how to swing really well then possible got a prostetic leg to run with, he could possibly jump really really high.
