Title IX
Title IX
Ok i really wanted to go to UCF but they dont have a mens track team. they have mens xcountry womens xcountry and womens track. i think it has somethin to do with that title IX bs cause wen i asked they said they would have to add another girls team or somethin.
Basicaly i was wondering wat exactly the law says and also i was wondering if this is the same law that girls use to get on guys teams in high school wen there is no girl team and if i could use it to get on UCF's women track team if i wind up goin there, thatd be pretty interesting. If you know a way around this or if UCF is doing anything to get a mens track team, cause ive emailed the coaches and stuff and they said no, or if you want to send them emails to start a track team pls do.
Because of this issue, and a few other things, UCF has dropped from like #1 or 2 on my list to my last fall back school. If you know anything that may help pls let me know.
thanks

There is no way you will be able to be on the women's team.
Maybe you could be a manager and maybe they will take pity on you and let you vault with them or something. Maybe.
You can spend time trying to get them to reinstate the program, but it's not gonna happen.
I recommend spending your energy finding schools that are a good fit for you that sponsor men's track.

yea i understand the frustration with Title IX... the rule should be revised. scholarships should be equal between sports. is it the men's fault that women dont play football? no... so those 80 scholarships and funding or whatever should just be ignored... the fact that womens track has what.. 22 scholarhips and mens track as 12, and that womens xc has like 8 and mens has zero is rediculous... thats how it is at Indiana anyways... oh and the rowing team recruits girls off of the streets of campus and give them scholarhips for rowing.... wow... id say its time to revise Title IX

Title IX is there because in the past, colleges and high schools abused their authority and did not spend funds on womens sports. Even today there are a lot of colleges not in compliance...to the extent that girls basketball teams have to get o away games in their own cars and boys teams have buses.
Title IX has opened up a world of opportunitu for women. Great.
Title IX is used as the cause/scapegoat for schools not having or funding men's programs, when the school has made a financial choice to keep other men's programs and cut your sport. They could also cut a women's sport, but in general, schools with football will have several women's sports to balance the scales. Track is the one sport that cn carry enough participants.
Title IX does not make a school cut a men's sport...the schools business philosophy does that. Title IX just ensures that equal energy is spent on women in atletics.
This from a father of 2 women's sports beneficiaries.

At my college they cut men's wrestling because of Title IX. They were so far off on it they had no choice but to cut the sport. There was plenty of money to fund the program, but not enough money to start a new girls team.
On paper, Title IX is an outstanding idea. Then again, Communism makes sense on paper too.
I am not making a direct compairsion between the two, but I am just saying that many things that seem like a good idea in theory, are a supreme mess when put into practice.

I seriously doubt that an institution would drop a men's sport solely to be compliant. Part of the three pronged approach to compliance with Title IX is moving toward meeting the demand for participation activities of both sexes. Also, the 1996 clarification by the US Department of Education said that they will never require a cap put on men's participation nor will they ever require a school to drop a sport to become compliant.
Title IX can be a great scapegoat for a school that needs to decrease expenditures. They can get rid of a sport to "become more compliant" when their real motive is to reduce expenditure.
There are some interesting videos on Title IX on the NCAA website. Check them out:

My school is HUGE on compliance....that is why the ratio of our track team is 37 men to 60 women. Soccer 26 men to 32 women. Tennis 9 men to 12 women. 7 mens golf to balance out 14 womens volleyball......Basketball is even..........
This is not an accident. There is plenty of money in our athletic department spent on our sports. Wrestling, by comparison to these other sports, is inexpensive.
The university had more men's sports than womens sports, so rather then add a womens, they cut a men's sport.
Even if it was a money issue. If the athletic department couldnt' affort to add a women's program, we lost a men's program because of Title IX

Just b/c some schools are too cheap or just don't have the money to make things equal doesn't mean that girls shouldn't be allowed to enjoy everything that guys have always had. And it's not even fair to use the it's not our fault girls don't play football thing b/c I begged to play football and all the coaches laughed in my face and said no. Even if there was a really good girl football player, what college do you know that would let them on their team? You can't just ignore those 80 football scholarships that no girl has any shot at getting. Title IX has given women so many opportunities. Now you guys realize what it was like for women before.

EASY.....the argument here isn't if Title IX is good for women.....that is a given... the point of Title IX is to give women the oppertunity that men have.......unfortunatly many schools decide to take away the opportunites that men have to make them equal with woman.
This doesn't help wome at all. They are still in the same place they were before. It just takes away the opportunities of men.
Like I said before......Title IX is a great idea in theory, but it is failing when being practiced.

Maybe I have it incorrect, but I thought I had heard that to make things equal school were not allowed to remove a boys/mens sport. Just what I had heard!

Well really the only way it would be fair is if they didn't drop any mens sports and just added womens programs. The truth is not every school can afford to do that which is sad, but it's a tough call. I don't kno the rules about what is allowed as far as making things equal and I understand why guys would be upset but this seems like there's some major title IX bashing going on here when really a lot of good has come out of it. I realize it's not perfect, but there's not a lot of options when money is an issue.
