Grandmother overcomes strokes to win gold
SHEILA Champion, who will celebrate her 71st birthday in September, is an inspiration to people her age. The Harold’s Cross native suffered two strokes over the last eight years, but was able to bounce back and win medals this summer in World and European athletics events.
Sprightly Sheila travelled to Poznan, Poland, in July to take part in the European Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as part of a strong Irish team.
The South Dubliner didn’t let her country down, winning a gold medal for race walking and a silver medal in the pole vault event.
It was a fantastic success story for Sheila, which followed on from her exploits in March at the World Masters Indoor (and limited Outdoor) Championships in Austria.
There, Sheila, won silver and bronze respectively in the pole vault and race walking events.
And earlier this month, Sheila brought home three gold medals from the National Championships for Masters in Tullamore, County Offaly.
Mother-of-three, Sheila, suffered a setback eight years ago when she had a stroke.
