Dennis Phillips, 60, sails upside down into the pole vault bar after snapping his pole during the takeoff at the first-ever Bend Open/Masters Track and Field Meet, staged Saturday at Bend High School. He was unscathed in the incident and went on to attempt a world record of 13 feet, 2 inches. He came up short, but placed second in his age group.

That must have happened while I was in the can! This is the first I know about it.

Dennis definately has great technique, and is a real competitor.

Yes

(more details if interested)
Well, yes and no. You see they split the pv competition into two groups. In the morning, they started vaulters who were going to enter the competition below 10'6", and in the afternoon, vaulters who would start at 10'6" or higher. Dennis jumped in the morning because he had to attend a wedding in the afternoon. Normally he would have started with the afternoon group like I did. I'm pretty sure that Dennins jumped 12' and then had the bar raised to 4.03m (13' 2.75").

I jumped 12'6" but it was an unusual competition for me. I warmed up as usual and then waited to enter the competition. They gave those of us entering the competition a run through. When I took mine I felt a slight strain in my lower right hamstring. I didn't think I could perform a real jump so I was about to withdraw but instead I decided to pass that height to give me a little more time to try to work through the injury. At the next height (12'6") I took a jump. I hit the bar but got lucky and the bar stayed up. Based on not being able to run full tilt on that jump, I withdrew. So that is how my season has ended. It was a good decision for my body.
