Getting Inverted
I was just checking to see if anyone had some helpful tips on wat to do. Im able to hold around 14' and get inverted and clear a 15' bungee, but when i try to move my grip up 6" to 14' 6" , i am unable to get my hips up and i just sit on it and let the pole unbend and not catching anyof the energy released by the pole but am still able to clear the smae height. I was just wondering wat neone wud have to say weather to keep the higher grip and try to work my form or lower my grip and get inverted

sounds like you might be getting to a certain point before the pole recoils and its shooting you out at that angle.... the only thing i can say to that is swing faster and more powerful. And make sure your hands are still above your head when you swing, dont hesitate.

Touché salesmen. 6" grip increase is pretty big. Start going an inch at a time. What it appears you are discribing is a failure to 'get around' your pole and get energy back from it. This could be caused by a lot of things, too high a grip is one of them. I would suggest staying at the 14' grip and potentially going to a stiffer stick, work on your swing--all that good stuff. The grip will come with time, but don't push it too much.

I would say as a rule of thumb dont move up your grip unless one or two of a few things happen.
1.) You are going through the pit easily (must go with #2)
2.) You are hitting correct technique and the pole is still very stiff.
3.) Your run is very consistent at that time.
4.) Your are jumping at least 10 inches over your handhold.
Those are my thoughts, im sure some one may have some to add, but look and remember those before deciding to move your grip up, and i generally go 3 inches at a time when my coach tells me its ok... but yes 1 inch would be safer.

Alright in case you aren't going to listen to all that good advice people just told you, here are my thoughts on what is going on. To me, it seems like your timing with the higher grip is off. You are probably trying to start your invert too early, not doing what some people would say "driving" the pole in first. This premature swing isnt in sync with the bending of the pole, so it feels weird, like you can't invert.
I have almost the same problem, except it doesn't matter where I hold. I've been watching a lot of videos and really what is happening to me is that Im never getting my hips up above my sholders, but my plant is consitant enough that I keep having to go up poles. Right now Im vaulting on a 15' 160 lb pole and I weigh 145... I've never managed to get upside down. Im guessing that my swing just isn't aggressive enough and I need to drive my knee into my chest better, but are there any mental preperations I can make to get myself to get inverted?
Im 6'1" 145 lbs, on a 15' 160 lb pole holding at about 13'4-13'8 we don't have any 14' or 13' poles that are stiff enough for me, so I have to use this 15' holding low... and my pr is very, very low, but hopefully I'll manage to pull off something a lot better thursday..

honestly man, that sounds like the exact stats i have on my 5 rights aproach, im 145 holding 13'3 on a 14'3 165, so you are actually on a little stiffer pole, and i get my hips up around 15'. My guess is that your take off may look good but you are doing something with your arms to stop your swing from continueing. Look at your jump and see if it is one of these 2 things.
1.) You may be locking out your bottom arm, which gets you through the pole but you need it above your head when you swing.
2.) When you swing you push too much with your shoulders, bringing both arms out in front of you rather than above you, where you need to be to swing.
Basically both of these lead to you needing to get your hands above your head when you swing.
Think of it this way, if you are doing bubkas on rings or on a bar, where are your hands? directly above your head.... now try to put your hands in front of your body somewhat while you swing, and you cant, because you arent swinging around your center of gravity. Just try getting your hands above your head and swing alll the way.... good luck!

well in the summer I don't get many chances to vault, but the last time I went (I've only vaulted once since my last post) I tried to keep being tall and having a better take off for a swing, and swinging harder. Overall I had a bad day, but that was because my pole caught in a ditch while warming up doing pole runs and my head was kinda spinning the whole rest of the day, but a few of my vaults I was actually able to get inverted. The problem I have now is, The turn didn't come, and Im guessing that my swing wasn't too good either. My guess is that I simply muscled my way up to being upside down, and thats why I simply ended up doing the same thing as those four stride drills where you land on your back. One of my vaults at 11' was really, really good, but other than that, it was a bad day. Any advice as to why Im not turning. One of the older vaulters there told me I need to focus on bringing my right hand to my right side of my hip, and another kid told me to bend the pole to the side and kick my foot sideways and my body will follow. That may work for him, but personally, I think thats really bad technique right there.
My problem was that I was taking off to forward though, and this caused me to not be able to get inverted. A lot of my jumps were under that day due to the wind as well, so I couldn't do much but guess how much the wind would effect my run and hope I was on enough to get a good swing in. I think the vaults where I over corrected were the ones where I was able to get inverted.

Moving grip up
Yeah, I agree. I think you should move up your grip a couple of inches at a time. For example. Start out holding at 14'. Once you get inverted, move it up 2 inches. When you get inverted at that grip, move up another 2. Once you get to where it is challenging to get inverted, but you can still kind of do it, keep practicing there, then move up when you are able to do it.
