Bubka is not even the "best" technician to ever vault. Technique is best measured by the ht cleared as compared to grip height. Bubka gripped somewhere around 17'3" (we will not subrtact the box for this comparison) and jumped (we will round up for this) 20'3". 3 feet above his top hand. Now lets take Joe Dial, who griped somewhere around 16'4" and jumped 19'5". 3'1" above his grip. So who was the better vaulter...................sure Bubka jumped higher but who had the better technique. Of course Bubka also blew every chance he had to make his record untouchable by making tons of $$$ for only breaking the record a cm at a time but who could blame him. He made several million for lots of records instead of only (i said ONLY) 1 million for doing it once and setting it so high even HE would have trouble jumping higher. Kinda fun to think that Bubka is the greatest vaulter EVER and he is not all at the same time.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

the reason for this is because Dial is not strong enough or fast enough to get on such a big pole holding as high as Bubka! OBVIOUSLY or Dial would also be going 20 feet. Also Dave Volz told me that when he jumped 20 feet he was on a 17'3 pole but was holding 17'0 so basically ur statement is bulls*** anyways. Bubka ran a 10.2 100m and I really dont think Dial did!

Thats a tough thing to be able to say. First off, it takes technique to hold high. You have to have a killer take off to be able to hold 17'3" on a pole, and i think we all consider the take off part of technique. In fact, I believe the take off is the hardest thing to master in the vault. Secondly, Bubka jumped his world record holding 17'3", for a 3 foot push (not including 9 inches of box), but i'm sure thats not his best push off of all time. Its just the best combination of grip and push for him to jump highest. I'd be willing to bet he's jumped a much higher push off holding lower on a stiffer pole. Probably much closer to 4 feet than 3 (again, not including the 9 inches of box) with a grip around 16'-16'5".

However, by no means am i calling your statement "bullsh*t"

I would be hesitant to call BS on anything PVJunkie says.

How about looking at it this way - if you coached beginners - who's technique or video's would you use? To be like Bubka - or any world record holder - you need good technique - plus great physical skills - plus genetics - if Bubka was 5'6" with the same speed, strength and technique - would he jump as high? think about plant angle when you answer - how many World Class High Jumpers are under 5'10" ? could have great technique - but - If I was teaching someone to HJ I would use Hieke Henkel video - (Dwight was also a very good technician) - oh - if you think Bubka was slower than 10.5 - you need to stop smoking that stuff for awhile - also if a under 6' slow - use to have ok hoops guy can take shots a 7' - a guy with Bubka's talent - give me a break - there was a reason why early in his careeer they tried to convice him to be a deca guy.

So Dane........your an expert?!?! Be very carful who you attack on this board I will call Danny and Mark and have them take you over to Bullwinkles and lock you in!! If you were too actually READ my post I never stated factual grip hts. Although I could do if I needed to. Then I would make a few calls to more that just ONE person whose name I feel obligated to drop every time I post and be extremely factual in my answer. I was making a point and Bubka does not have the best ht over top hand clearance in history. If that for some reason offends you I AM sorry but it is the truth. Yes he is the world record holder and had he just jacked one up there he would hold the best grip to clear ht also.............but he didnt so he doesnt.

He is young and full of energy - many a phrase has been uttered that causes others to simply shake a head - but - the joys of this site - it allows you to state - disagree - hopefully gain form others wisdom -when I stop learning is the day they put me in the ground - or turn me to ashes and spread me on a track (wife says that would be fitting) -

pv junkie, Don't you think if Bubbka dropped his grip to 16'-4" He could have a higher effective push? I'll gaurantee you one thing though, Joe Dial had the best volzing technique ever!

Go back and read my original post............I was shooting from the cuff. I guess this could make for some interesting research. How high WAS that persons grip for THAT jump.......................

Now lets not take away from any jump make with holder.........they WERE legal for a LONG time.

sorry, going to have to disagree with you on this one. Volz is the man and will always be. Why do you think they call it "volzing" in the first place. i've seen some of dave's jumps where he actually bent the crossbar down with his hand to allow his hips to clear, then gently left the bar back on the pegs, the whole ime the ends of the crossbar never left the pegs. it doesn't get much better than that

Sorry guys-

Bubka had a very difficult time dropping his grip and still jumping high (19+) That is why he sometimes struggled under less than perfect conditions (hard to jump in a headwind with a 5.35m pole!)

There seems to be some confusion about the physical and technical sides of the vault. When you get to a certain point, they become the same thing. Bubka was able to jump on such a big pole because of how good his technique was on the runway (not because he could run 10.2 - he couldn't run 10.2) Bubka was very very efficient at applying force to the ground. He was not terribly efficient at applying force to the pole. This is why some guys have jumped close to as high as he did with much smaller poles. They were more efficient at applying force to the pole. Joe Dial was probably the best in that respect.

When you are trying to decide who is best to emulate, you would probably be wise to look at someone who was not a complete freak of nature - both of those were one of a kind.

Barto.
