SC Pole Vault Camp w/BaggettPV, DJ, Altius
********** May 2nd Update *********************
GREAT NEWS!!! We have just added "Altius" (Beginner to Bubka author Alan Launder) to our camp coaching staff. This is really shaping up to be an exciting camp. We now have Rick Baggett "BaggettPV", DJ Johnston "DJ", Alan Launder and myself. Come join us if you can.
***********************************************
We have a great summer camp planned with an extraordinary coaching staff. I will have two very special guest coaches, Rick Baggett and David "DJ" Johnston assisting me. The three of us were together for my December two day camp and it was awesome, but not enough time to go into everything that we wanted to do. So we began to colaborate on what we would do if we had more time. In June, we have five days to cover a multitude of areas. We plan on taking pole vault camps to a whole new level. Call, email or visit our web site below for more details.
We promise a vaultastic experience!

Comments as posted by BaggettPV, (Coach Rick Baggett) transfered from "Can Tommy S. go 19' 6" this year?" in the College section. This is a sampling of what we will be covering during the coaches only portion during the camp.
Lets see:
Presently holding at 5.05 (16'7") so 15' 11" in the box. He has gone 42" over before. Put that together and you have 19'5". But he went 42 over with a much lower grip so adding another Inch with the higher grip..would give him a 19'6" jump. But, the goal is to get the grip back up to the 5.10 where he had been before and then adding the skills for a 48" over grip clearance. Let's see, that should be what 20'?
The following in essence was the 4 year plan after high school.
The Freshman plan was to be able to raise the grip with corresponding skills and abilities to 5.00 and increase tho over grip to 48" (19' 8")
Sophomore, Grip to 5.05 and clearance to 50" (injuries stopped that goal.
Junior, Grip to 5.10 and clearance 52" (Don Baird went 52 over on a 15' pole in the 80's) (20' 4")
Senior, grip stay at 5.10 and clearance to 54" (20' 6")
The planning for the skill progressins were creatd as he was a developing athlete before he went to Oregon. All thru those 6 years he was matching or over acheiving the goals set forth in his performance and training. Some mishaps along the way but those are uncontrollable.
So let me ask you guys, what is your 6 year plan?
What are the long term plans for:
Holding higher?
Speed development
Pole carry efficiency
Transition to the plant
Jump mechanics at takeoff
Jumping on bigger poles?
Strength development
Gymnastics Dynamics
Power transitions
Increasing your Clearance amount?
Balance with a moving support
Body awareness
Power transitions to the support of the pole
Swing mechanics
Developing an aggressive behavior
Visualization
Eliminating Negative self talk
Creating routines for success
Creating confidence thru repitition
If anyone is interested I will present many of these concepts along with the solutions to American Pole Vault Dvelpment at the South Carolina coaching clinic later in the June. Check out www.CarolinaExtreme.com for info.
Thanks for the opportunity to rant,
Rick Baggett

Beginner to Bubka author Alan Launder added to camp staff.
Bumping. Edited our original post to reflect the addition of BTB author Alan Launder to our camp staff.
Shealy, Baggett, Johnston and Launder... dinner conversations will be great... and educational I am sure.

I am sure it was a fabulous learning experience for all involved. The pole vault competitions that were held in early June at University of South Carolina were great. Ideal conditions (indoors) and great atmosphere.
SC Camp
I learned many things at USC with the other coaches and the experiences. Alan is a Master Teacher (I am a teacher of 25 years and his teaching stratagies are awesome!! If you are a teacher you should watch one of his sessions to remind yourself of what teaching is like). The foremost is that too many kids are far too concerned with the grip heighth. I never heard anyone talking about how high over their grip they jumped. Just how high they were holding and if they could hold higher they could go higher. This is true but only to a small extent.
I want to remind everyone out there that overall performance is made up of:
-Pole Size (over body weight)
-Grip Heighth
-Clearance over grip
I believe a high school boy should be:
20 lbs plus
14'8"
24"
A High School Girl:
20 lbs plus
13'8"
18" after 4 years of training!
And none of the variables can be sacrificed at the expense of another. The best girl there was:
20 lbs plus
13'2"
0
Seems as tho she was never taught how to get on top of the pole during her development. But I have to say, they are aware of it now! Too bad many more couldn't make it. Maybe next year! It will be even better.
Oh yeah, all my previous posts on Skipper relate to this concept. His numbers were:
25 lbs plus (into the flex numbers after a 210 lb pole)
16'
33" = National HS Record.

Rick,
I am glad another coach is finally addressing this sad, but true scenario that is going on.
Seems our top youth vaulters are just getting on big poles for the sake of getting on big poles. Problem is once on those big poles if you technique is not solid it is even harder to improve. You can only raise your hand hold so high.
I have always stated. If you really want to take this sport serious. Peak at age 28 to 33 not 20. Master the vault as a youth and work on getting faster. Than start moving up poles when your ready not to gain an inch.

i agree with what is said about grip height, the camps that i help with is the same, me personally, i have been trying to improve my top and getting over my pole just coming from 4 strides out. My body weight is about 140-143 and i use a 13'3 185 griping at 13 and have been getting my hips consistently up with the 15 band, i just need to work on finishing, but im sure as my coach has said i would be able to jump 14 on that pole, so 13' minus the box 12'4'' 20 inches over isn't too bad. Im still working on it. haha thought i would put my stats on here. i hope i can make the camp next year!

How about this one...
There is a kid in the league here that is holding at 14'8" and has a pr of 12'6". The coaches think thats alright..arggggg
So, lets see 14' in the box, 12'6" pr....a whopping negative 18". And thats the state of HS Pole Vault in America?
I am tired of this stuff.
If you are not a HS kid going 18" over grip and you don't have to worry about weighing in before meets then listen to the people adding info to this site. But be careful tho. Some don't know what they are talking about.
Read "Beginner to Bubka" for technique
Read "Periodization of training" by Tudor Bompa
Look into being a good TEACHER (I got reinforced on teaching skills with Allan that will carry over into my classroom next year!)
And always remember an excellent athlete makes a coach look excellent. All my friends who are excellent coaches take great pride in the success of their average athletes that do extrordinary things later in their career. Garth Willard and Ron Johnson are my peices of work....and lifelong friends.
