Spencer McCorkel (AR) 17-0

Unread postby AVC Coach » Sat Apr 08, 2006 8:33 am

Spencer McCorkel made 17-0 on his first attempt at the Russellville Cyclone Relays, then left the bar on the pegs at 17-5 on his first attempt, but was called for "Volzing". Did the exact same thing on his second attempt.

He broke the meet record by 17 inches.

When you come up short and steady the bar with your hand, that's "Volzing" or "Viging". Named after some great vaulters who were famous for steadying the bar, Dave Volz (USA) and Tierre Vigneron (France).

He was on a 14'9" 185 when he made 17-0 and a 15'3" 185 when he "Volzed" the bar at 17-5. I set the old meet record in 1988 with 15'7". he jumped 15'4" to win the meet and immediately jacked the bar to 17'0".

Yeah, he's gotten taller since indoors. He's 6'3" now! Just kidding.

very diplomatico of you to just give the facts, but do you think it was a good call?

even if they were volz's, it is very impressive to pull it off twice in a row :dazed:

The official was going to give it to him. He even started remeasuring the bar to make it official. Spencer and I talked it over and decided that it just wasn't legit. Of course, we thought he'd make it on his next jump.

Looking back, I'm glad we did the right thing. If the bar was at 16 feet and it was just for a meet record, i'm not sure if we would have made the same choice. But when you're talking about a bar that could possibly give you the national lead, you want to know that it's the real deal.

You don't see honesty like that these days... Definitely agree with Mecham... if you have a video of those jumps it would be awesome to see.
