It's hard to say. I mean it's strange to think that Skipper never broke the indoor national record, but he did dislocate or break a finger that ended his indoor season his senior year, if my memory is correct. However, the biggest factor in my opinion is that Spencer is not maxing out on grip yet. If he were holding high 15's or 16+ I would deem it more improbable, but with only a 14'6 grip as of right now, I can say there is a good chance with a higher grip or a stiffer pole he will break the record.

Skipper didn't jump in many meets indoors his senior year. He broke a pole attempting the record at indoor nationals and broke his wrist or hand, something to that effect. He didn't vault again until districts that spring.
He could have gone higher if he had been healthy all year.

Thanks Becca, I knew it was something to that effect. I'm sure he would have jumped higher, as he was an all around extremely talented athlete.
AVC Coach, Has Spencer run any timed races? Just wonder what kind of speed he is capable of carrying.

I agree with you on the grip. We've done a lot of work since last season and this meet was a literal measuring stick as to what Spencer can do with a higher grip. You don't really know for sure what a vaulter can do until it's meet time and the adrenaline is pumping.
Think of it like this. He will have to improve 2% on his performance from this past meet in order to jump 17'7". We have some longer poles now and hopefully a little taller grip can make up that difference. I know that sounds a lot simpler than it really is, but it's a realistic theory.
