Irvington showed its depth in the pole vault. The Bulldogs swept the first four spots. Casey DiCesare won, clearing 15 feet. He just missed the state record at 15-9 1/2 on his final attempt, brushing the bar with his chest.

"I was a little bit out," he said. "I didn't realize how much better I had gotten. Last year that pole felt really stiff and I was scared I couldn't get upside-down on it. But it's exciting because I know that I'm getting better."

Scott DiCesare placed second in 14-0, sophomore Dean DiCesare was third in 11-0, and Justin Ross cleared 10-6 for fourth. Casey and Scott have both committed to UCLA.

The atmosphere at the kickoff meet was much different than in previous years because the competition was held at the New Balance Armory, the site of the National Scholastic championships, instead of at Rockland Community College, where the other two kickoff meets will be held.

"It's so much better to start here," Casey DiCesare said. "To be in spikes and to just be in this atmosphere is great."

Rockland notebook: Irvington senior Casey DiCesare leaps into Section 1 record book

Casey DiCesare is used to it by now. The building going silent. Someone starting a slow clap, which becomes faster as he trots down the runway.

The sound drowns out once he's airborne, and everything seems to happen in slow motion.

He's on autopilot until that moment when he crosses over the pole-vault bar and everything speeds up again. A sympathetic groan if he misses, a cheer if he clears it.

The Irvington senior usually hears more cheers than groans. Which was the case Monday night, when DiCesare broke the Section 1 record in the pole vault at the New Jersey Spiked Shoe Holiday Festival. His height of 15 feet, 9 1/2 inches topped former North Rockland star Ryan Dall's record of 15-9 set in 1993 and was third best in state history.

"Technically, that jump was probably my best ever," DiCesare said. "I was ecstatic."

He became even more encouraged with his attempts at 16-0. DiCesare switched to a bigger pole and said he could have made the height, but made a fatal mistake on his last attempt.

"There's no reason why I shouldn't have cleared it on my third attempt," he said. "I started celebrating in the air and hit (the bar) on the way down."

DiCesare's coach and father, Paul DiCesare, said: "If you watch the tape, he was over by six inches. The state record is 16-2 (by Brian Duggan of Farrell last year). That could go at the next meet."

DiCesare had more reasons to celebrate when he saw teammate Tyrik Overton clear 6-4 in the high jump to place second. Also, his brother Scott matched his indoor personal best, clearing 15-0 in the pole vault. Scott DiCesare won the pole vault at the Bishop Loughlin Games last Saturday.

"It was important for me to reclaim my throne over Scott," Casey said.

Ah, sibling rivalry.
