And now the 3rd part of our trilogy of NCAA Preview Issues. 3 means
DIII and I just LOVE DIII having been a DIII competitor for Tufts
way back when (Class o' '92, just about 2 feet short of qualifying
for nationals in '89).

DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana is this year's host.
Tickets are CHEAP ($7 for a two day ticket for adults!) so if you're
in the area and want to see folks compete just because they love the
sport head on down Interstate 70 to Greencastle

It's been quite a year for the DIII folks. Allegheny's Jeremy Scott
has made a ton of headlines while breaking the DIII record just
about every week, snaring the top collegiate mark of the year and
most surprisingly earning a trip to the World Championships in
Birmingham, England this weekend. Jeremy did in fact decide to take
that trip and as such will not be defending his DIII crown. However
the field is still loaded with some talented dudes. For the women we
have two ladies would be leading the Division II field and for once
in all these preview issues I can say the field is loaded with
North-easterners YEAH!

Whither Laura Rosenberger - owner of 4 NCAA DIII golds and 1 silver???
That is the biggest question on my mind since she has been a perennial
favorite and is such an awesome lady. She started her season off
alright but wasn't able to crack the 12 foot barrier this season
which abruptly ended on February 8th after a 3.35m 10'11.75" performance
at the State Farm Games. Hope everything's all right...

The field was further diluted when last year's indoor and outdoor
champ Kelly Bowen of Nebraska Wesleyan decided to transfer to DI
Nebraska. However we still have a dynamite field ready to face off
on Saturday.

Even If Laura had shown she was gonna face some nasty competition
from Kim Marino and Angela Hilgers who are nearly a foot about the
rest of the competitors which include 7 count 'em SEVEN vaulters
from northeastern schools. About time I say. 2 of 'em actually
reside in our great state of Massachusetts so of course I'll be
rooting for 'em along with all the others.

14 made it to Greencastle but 15 were turned back at the gate...

Kim's got the 2003 leading mark but has only come within a foot of
that mark only one other time during the season. Not often do you
see a season low and season high differ by more than 4 feet! Still

as she has the #2 through #6 marks and is undefeated in '03.
Surprisingly this is her first championship appearance indicating
that this year has seen some MONSTROUS improvement. Gold medal

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Poor Bethany finished second
to her teammate Angela Hilgers 4 times this season (and third
another two times). On practically any other squad she'd be the #1
vaulter but heck with her and Angela, LaCrosse has a serious 1-2
threat. She PR'd big for 2nd at the WIAC championships and who knows
what will happen when she flies into Greencastle...

Cat is coached by one of the finest human beings I know - Paul
"Sluggo" Slovenski. He was my first collegiate coach and man I'll
never forget that year. Whether it was getting his jeep stuck on
the top of a snowplow pile or seeing how many times he could spin
around the pole and nearly landing on our head coach it was never
boring. I miss the guy. Anyway he seems to have done a fine job
with Cat here.

Another from the Great WHite Northeast and the 1st of two RPI
Engineers. 2 women from RPI. Man when my brother went to RPI
(briefly) back in the mid 70's if you ever saw two women at RPI at
the SAME TIME you would think your coke bottle glasses had a crack
in them. Let's just say women were a rarity on campus at the time.
Now we have 2 of 'em heading to Greencastle with a serious chance of
coming home with some hardware.

with quite a bit. She was a 10-footer in high school (Quabbin
Regional '01) but it looks as if she's finally breaking a few of

back in 2000. Hey I saw it personally. She took a year off in '01
and has struggled mightily since. She's been consistent around 11'
all season but she's got the skills for mid 12'. Hopefully she'll

As we mentioned before Jeremy Scott and his 5.70m 18'08.25" are
heading to England which leaves the field wide open for these 12
worthy competitors. And geez only one of 'em is from east of I-75.
Then again only one of 'em is west of Missouri. Lets just say this
is pretty much a central affair

There's lots of disappointed dudes that won't be seeing all the
wonderful sights that Greencastle has to offer including 3 Engineers
and a Cadet all from the Northeast...

Hans took a year off in '02 after garnering a 2nd and a 1st in his
frosh campaign. He's come back this year with a vengeance. I have
him listed at 5.19m 17'00.25" from last weekend's WIAC championships
but he's only declared as 16'10.00". Interesting. He's my favorite
for the gold here as he's won every meet he's entered this year and
has cleared at least 5.01m 16'05.25" in each of 'em - that lowest
mark would still put him at #4 this season.
