Unread postby mooski33 » Sun Mar 02, 2003 9:40 pm

alright, my coach asked me to compile a list of the top ten things polevaulters should not do and the punishment for doing it..for instance, if a person were to bail out on the runway multiple times, they've gotta go check their steps and rerun the steps on the turf or track 5 times...things like that..I would appreciate any imput at all! thanks guys!

got one for ya....if you pull your arms into your body at the plant, you run a lap (or some distance) carrying the pole horizontally over your head with both arms straight up. They'll get real sick of running if they keeping pulling.
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

At my high school, our coach was real strict on having someone catch the pole so it doesnt hit the ground. One day, one of the frosh forgot to have someone catch his pole, and it hit the ground, so our coach made the rule of running a 400 with the pole if you dont have someone catch it for you.

Dont raise your grip more than 3 inches at a time

Through doing and coaching there are a few thing that are encountered that are PV "no-no's" #1 never monkey grip (beginners usually do this) this can lead to broken wrists. #2 never whip you head back at take off (this makes you position in air different and you dont know where you are)
#3 long last strides, the penultimate step is important and needs to be dialed in for maximum performance. Late last steps can lead to a really sore back or other worse things.

I was always told to move your grip up about the width of a palm

one of my biggest no-no's in practice and in meets? running through. Do it 3 times in any one jumping session and you are done jumping and have to go back to doing drills. I also usually make them run a lap or do push ups for running through on each one. If you have a step and the weather isn't outrageously bad, there is no reason why you should run through.

My No-No

One of the first three things I always teach the young vaulters is to never store your chalk in tuperware or any other container with a snap-on lid. The lids always seem to pop off at the worst possible time.
