falling bars

Unread postby blazerunner121 » Tue Apr 12, 2005 9:16 pm

is there a certain rule where a person must leave the pole vault pit before the bar falls down?

... when i cleared 10', i got myself up, picked up my pole and just left the mat when the bar fell like 4 secs later. it was marked a miss.

That's not a rule. People like to think it is, and rush off the pit, but they are not doing any good.

ive heard that if it falls after you complete your vault then it is up to the official to decide whether you made it fall or not.....i didnt think there was any set rule about being off the pit..........

In the Bell Athletics building it is a rule however, but there is a little bit more to it...you must not only get off the pit but also out the door before the bar falls for it to be counted! GOOD FUN

and then there's those lovely 'wind calls'...not fun telling a vaulter its a miss when she claims it was wind >.<..had to do it though...it was a headwind!

There is no such rule. Call in the myth-busters for this one.

The jump has not ended and will not be recorded until the official declares the jump to be successful. There is no time limit for that. As long as the bar is moving on it's own along the pegs, he will hopefully apply some common sense before he declares the jump good or not. A couple of seconds is usually enought time to know if it will stay or not.

Chances are that if you hit the bar, even in a strong tail wind, the jump may probably be declared a miss if it falls especially if the initial bar movement is in the horizontal direction (i.e. down the pegs) of the pit.

reason behind bell athletics rule is
if your not in the facility when the bar falls then its not your fault you wernt there
although i have yet to see it happen there has been some close attempts which can be extremely funny if done right
Im sure if you do this at a real meet you might could argue your way out of the miss
"but i wasnt even here when it fell?"
The moment never lies
