Dale. AKA mrpolevault. He was a good one. University of Delaware vaulter if I remember correctly. Coached by the Micronesian national recordholder.
I'm sure he's a lurker on this site.

Me and my coach figured out a good way to keep from buying new poles. Just take a pole bigger than you need (if no one is using it of course) and sand down the soft side a little bit. Use a circular sander and you can fade in the work with the rest of the pole nice and smooth! it makes the pole waaaay softer and easier to vault on! it takes a little bit of practice to figure out how much to sand off but we figure for each sanding run down the pole knocks off 4 lbs of stiffness.
It works great if you can't afford new poles!

I tried it and it doesn't work.
I took a 10lb weight and stuck it on the end of the pole.
Since the hole was bigger than my pole, I wrapped the top of it in duck tape until the weight fit pretty snug.
10lbs never felt so heavy!
First 2 times down the runwy the extra weight made me miss the box and I planted my pole against the mat. It was not good.
3rd time I was able to get up but not knock the weight off. Didn't quite make the pit.
Then my coach had a good idea of tying a line to the weight so that somebody could jerk the weight off for you at the right moment. But coach didn't pull hard enough and the weight scraped the top of my head. nearly knocked me silly.
So today we're going to rig up a pole to hold the line up high so that the weight will come off the top of the pole above my head so i don't get hit again.
hopefully I'll have success at it today!
Wish me luck!

My coach is considered to be one of the finest vaulting coaches in the world. He was the head track coach for Micronesia back in the '68 Olympics.
Here's our secrets of my success
1. Distance = speed. Get a long run, like 24-30 steps.
2. Takeoff 1 foot under. My coach calls it "prebending" the pole prior to takeoff. Load it up!
3. Double-leg swing. Try it on a high bar. You swing faster and harder with the legs together.
4. Slide bottom hand. When inverted, slide your bottom hand up to your top hand. It's easier to push off with your hands together than far apart.
5. Standards at 3" or closer. You don't want to lose valuable inches in height going horizontally!
6. Rocket Poles!
They've helped me to the following accomplishments
America East Indoor Conference Champion 1999
UofDelaware Freshman record
2 time Athlete of the Week for the UofD

Why oh why did he choose Delaware of all schools to say he was from....
UD is actually a really good school. Beautiful campus and nice facilities. Their track team isnt all that but unlike alot of the other large schools - they offer almost no track scholarships at all.
Anyway - I just wanted to defend my home state and college and say that we have no affiliation with this guy whatsoever.
(And for those of you who took any of the posts seriously.... THAT scares me
