DiCesare twins win pole vault relay

Caleb Stuart won gold in the pole vault (13-0) and finished fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.51).

Eric Jimmerson (10-0) finished second in the pole vault

Peyton Akers (8-0) and Logan Kendle (7-6) tied for fourth and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault.

Crockett also took home gold in the pole vault (9-1).

In the boys meet, it was a big day for Brunswick's Steve Slovenski. Slovenski eclipsed and shattered the meet pole vault record held by his father and Bowdoin College track coach Peter Slovenski (Lewiston, 1974).

Steve Slovenski cleared 13-08 to beat the record and won the event by elevating over 14-07 (establishing a new state record). Slovenski also finished second in the high jump and fourth in the senior 55 hurdles.

CANAVAN THIRD IN POLE VAULT

NEW HAVEN - Stonington High coach John McNally thinks Tina Canavan has a good chance to qualify for the State Open next Saturday.

Canavan cleared seven feet in the pole vault in the Class S meet on Saturday.

"She will likely make the State Open. If she doesn't, I'll be shocked," McNally said after Saturday's meet.

Canavan had the third best vault of the day in the event in Class S. Caitlin Crowley of Lewis Mills cleared 7-6 to win.

The top finisher in each of the four classes, LL, L, M, and S, qualifies for the State Open. The next 14 top scores also qualify, for a total of 18 athletes in each event.

Two other girls cleared 7-0, but Canavan cleared the distance first, giving her the edge heading into the Open.

Canavan's vault gave the Bears six points in the meet. Canavan tied her personal best with the vault.

Two Spartans, Eagles' relay team win track crowns

Two athletes from Mount Tabor, a relay team from East Forsyth and pole-vaulters from Southwest Guilford and Watauga won state titles yesterday at the NCHSAA indoor track-and-field championships at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse

Daniel Keller of Southwest Guilford and Sallie Gurganus of Watauga won pole-vault titles.

Keller repeated as the boys pole-vault champion (14-0), and Gurganus overcame a nasty fall to win the girls pole vault (10-6) and added to the 4-A outdoor title she won last May. Gurganus said she suffered a mild concussion after snapping a pole on her second attempt and falling outside the landing pit.

"After crashing on my second attempt I was dizzy," she said. "I think I came back and finished strong, though I think I could have done better."

Melissa Gale needed a pole that was just right. She got it from an unexpected source.

Gale cleared 11 feet, 6 inches to win the Group IV pole vault. Robin Freidman of Hillsborough (Somerset County) was second at 11-0.

It was Gale's first state title.

"I don't think it's sunk in yet," she said. "I'm out of it. I'm on cloud nine."

Gale struggled early in the competition. "The top of my jump was ugly," she said.

The problem was her pole.

"I was bending it," she said, "but it wasn't popping me back up."

Gale has struggled all season to find the right pole.

"Some are too stiff," she said, "and some are too flexible. You want one that is just right for you."

Gale's problems ended when she borrowed a pole from a Clifton High School coach. She and her dad, Dan, were talking with the coach between vaults and he suggested she use one of his poles.

"I don't even know his name," she said. "I just know him as the Clifton coach."

Gale used the pole to clear 10-6, 11-0 and 11-6.

"It (the pole) felt more like me than the other ones," she said.

Gale gave the pole back after the competition was over.

Maybe she can strike a deal with the Clifton coach for next Sunday's Meet of Champions.

15 yr old freshman Jessica Doyle of Hays High School, coached by her mentor, 2-time Texas State Champ and record holder Britni Lawrence, jumped 11'9 to win the Wes Kittley High School Invitational and set a new pr. Freshman teammate Bailey Holmes tied her pr of 10'0 to place 6th.

Orono junior Rachel Bergman was the only other Eastern Maine girls titlist, with a win in the 400 meters. She also was second in the pole vault (9-foot-6) and sixth in the 200.

"I was pretty close to personal bests in my other two events. I wanted to get 10 feet in pole vault. My best is 9-6, but I won my first indoor title, so I'm happy about that," Bergman said.

The girls meet, which was set up to be a duel between two-time defending champ Thornton Academy of Saco and Scarborough, turned into a 27-point Red Storm victory after Trojans' star Kat Rice sprained her ankle warming up for the pole vault.

Brunswick senior Steve Slovenski, who is Walter Slovenski's grandson, set a record in the pole vault with a vault of 14 feet, 3 inches.

Scarborough also made an early statement by taking places 1, 3 and 4 in the pole vault, with Karen Smith getting the victory.

"We knew it would be a dogfight," said Red Storm coach Ron Kelly. "We knew that as long as we got our points, it was going to be a dogfight."
