Nevada gets new Vault Coach
Vault/Throws Coaching
A good Pole Vault Coach can coach any event in Track and Field....Vault Coaches are the most well rounded of them all, and to vault you do other events for training and active rest....

I tend to agree with that. However, my experience has been that the throws coach is also strapped with the task of coaching the vaulters. THAT I DON'T GET!!! or maybe I'm an elitest or something...........

I had coached a kid (Rob Malprus) in HS that did both. He was a stud how ever. 6'4" was the quaterback and could thow a football 70yards with a 5 step drop which I'm sure some how would help translate into jav. The Kid was probably one the most under developed HS pole vault talent I've personally ever seen.
My first year coaching was his senior year. Despite vaulting for 3 years prior with two vaut only coaches his pr was 9'6". This from a kid who again was 6'4" 170lbs ran a 11.1 100 meter!! By the end of the year he could do a straight pole pop up holding at 13'3". His senior year after trying to break three years of bad habits he went 13'. Any thing above 13' he would take off on the way up. We didn't have a pole big enough for him. The last three weeks he started to figure things out and was blowing through on a 15' 180 on a five step approach. It was getting to be dangerous because he was landing deep into the pit.
He ended up vaulting for central WA for a year but had the same problem. He was over rotating the biggest pole they had- 16' 185. After his freshman year of college he joined the navy!

It's amazing I haven't talked/thought about Rob for two years. Who did I run into at the gym? Rob Malphrus. Just got kicked out of the Navy-which I thought must be pretty hard to do. He is planning on vaulting and playing football at either WWU or one of the California state schools.

My teammates and I began throwing jav for fun for our only home meet my freshman year. this only put more stress on my shoulder. i can't say that i regret doing another event, but now i have a nice dose of cortisone in my shoulder to get me through my senior year... corrilation or not, i think you need to make sure that the athlete must not feel too banged up from the indoor season to throw together some jav practices. Or if you have a nutoriuos inside take-off.
...just my thoughts, take them as you wish
