putters got balls ... but vaulters got great bendable poles! ;) :P

where is that list of 10 things that explain why it's good to date a vaulter?

I think we should add "because we can bend our poles while we're using them" ;)

people who do about ten things before actually starting their vault as a pre-vault routine

meets called for weather, and the 7' vaulter that wins because he was the only one to vault.

not being able to get a practice jump in before going for a height at a meet.

when the people running the meet raise the bar about a foot higher because you were running the 2 hundred and weren't there. it takes, what, about a min to run and get back?

valuter's who are silent the entire meet.

Worrying about wether your bus will get you to the meet on time, especially if they hold the bus for an extra half hour for the person that woke up too late.

1 jump for warm ups is always fun.

I HATE that. We have a ton of meets that are an overnight trip away, and the sprinters NEVER want to get out of bed on time the next morning.

eh, that is better than no jumps.

as for pet peeves, i would have to go with uninformed officials. i was once at a usatf summer youth meet several years ago(a supposedly big meet in fact) and the official would not let me check my step after my vault and i was once at a d3 national meet where they would not allow this!

also, the meets where they try to make you take two vaults in a row if you miss your first one? only encountered this a couple of times, but i think the reasoning is that it makes less moving of the standards which does not make sense since an efficient official crew can make that not a time factor, and it encourages the vaulter to use practically his whole 60 seconds on the runway on his second attempt.

finally--running through. i am as guilty of this as anyone at times, but i think we can all agree that it is possibly the biggest problem that vaulters face from time to time and when someone does not correct this it is a huge problem. i guess what irks me about running through is when an athlete makes excuses trying to blame something other than himself. again, i have had this problem in the past though, but no longer O:-)

My Top 10 "Pieces of Work"

Unread postby TXPVCOACH » Tue Dec 21, 2004 1:12 pm

1. Officials Who Tell You It is Better to Jump Into the wind because it will keep the bar on the pegs.

2. Officials Who Tell You It is Better to Jump Into the wind because you get more lift like a plane.

3. Vaulters that cannot remember their steps, grip or pole used everyday!

4. The Person responsible for installing the vault runways in the endzone and only put one box in.

5. The Person responsible for installing the vault runways in the endzone running East-West to save space.

6. Vaulters that believe they can vault better from the other side of the highway holding 3 feet higher than they should.

7. The person who recommends a vaulter raise his grip when the vaulter is already coming up short and you know if they lowered it 3 inches they could boom the height.

8. Vaulters that run down the runway backwards in to a 20 mph wind and expect their step to be on.

9. Vaulters who think their steps change when they change poles and not the grip.

10. Official that have no clue, but know it all!

Especially when the have their own neatly organized training log to write their numbers down in!

5. The Person responsible for installing the vault runways in the endzone running East-West to save space.

Far too common in Texas!

6. Vaulters that believe they can vault better from the other side of the highway holding 3 feet higher than they should.

I hate overgrippers who can't swing!
7. The person who recommends a vaulter raise his grip when the vaulter is already coming up short and you know if they lowered it 3 inches they could boom the height.

But, But, if I grip "back" on it, it will soften the pole up, right? (South Texas lingo to grip "back" instead of "up." ;)

8. Vaulters that run down the runway backwards in to a 20 mph wind and expect their step to be on.

Duh!
10. Official that have no clue, but know it all!
