i dont really have any issues staying focused. the only real time i get frustrated is when half our team changes what session they want to vault in at the last minute without telling anyone and we end up with 9 people on the damn runway. so we get about one vault every 15 minutes and not enough feedback.

practicing with people who are not focused and slow down workouts because of that

keeping multiple coaches with multiple visions of what you should end up accomplishing on the same page. it isn't always possible, and the end result is usually LOTS of drama.

teachers whose main lesson to you is that you're SOL if you have a meet during school hours

and
friends who don't understand why you can't skip practice on fridays

My biggest distraction is a coach who is telling me to something that doesn't make sense during competition and having a coach that doesn't believe that i can jump more than s/he thinks!

The clap can be fun if you know how to "zone" everything out expect the vault, but it can also hurt if you are on your third attempt and going for a PR.

"aviod the clap -- Jimmy Dougan"

"Hey, thats good advice!" name the movie

never been a big fan of the clap myself but dont mind clapping at all if someone calls for it.
for some reason clapping seems like something more common to long jumper types than vaulters. supposedly it is more popular among athletes in europe. anyone know if this is true?

clapping is fine if you are jumping at a high bar for a PR or something. It annoys the hell out of me when peoeple do it on every single jump. I had a buddy who knew that I hated it and started it up right before I was getting ready t o take a jump. I dropped my pole, walked off the runway and got a time foul on that attempt.

That's a pretty strong aversion to the clap lol

good point. of course websites and such tend to be more of a homework distraction for me than a vaulting distraction.

You can only train so many hours a day. I don't think too many people are on here instead of training. I'd be willing to bet that being plugged into the pole vault community has inspired a lot of people to work harder ;)

Whats so bad about the clap?
Its the crowd gettin behind ya.
Soak it up and just vault. If you are at a height where people are clappin for ya, you should be in a good enough zone to thrive off the rhythm, not whine about it.
