yeah, actually i think that leaving the extenders on like that at higher heights can be dangerous for the vaulters and the poles

I totally agree. I've crashed into them a couple times after a bad plant.

I can't see the pic, but if you guys are talking about the picture of Matt Phillips that is on the main page of this site... it's from the Alki Beach Vault in 2002. During the elite competition, the guys and girls vault head to head with a 4 foot bar difference. That is why the extenders are on while he is vaulting 18 feet or whatever.

i bet that was an interesting competition. that is good that there was at least a reason for the extensions.

We do it every year at Tacoma and Alki. This year Matt Phillips won the elite competition with 17'6", beating Erica Bartolina on misses (she cleared 13'6")
