I think it has to do with being able to hear the officials, and warnings from others about flying objects and runners on the track.

I have heard the same thing, they are afraid it creates an unfair advantage, just like you aren't allowed to use cell phones, and you can't watch a video of yourself jumping till after the meet. I know thats the rule at least in California for high schools and junior colleges.
