oh man... officials these days

i had a meet today, and the official pretty much had no clue about what he was doing... kinda pissed me off.... first of all, there were 30 girls in the event and it wuz supposed to start at 9 and he didn't show up until 8:40 to open the pits for run throughs... then we asked him if he was doing five alive and he said oh whats that... then we explained it to him but his way of doing five alive was to go straight thru the order and pretend he was doing five alive so then every girl waiter for 20-30 minutes between each attempt... he was giving runthroughs after 3 heights to girls that had already entered the competition.. whaaaa? ive never seen that done before. He didn't know how to use the crossbar putter upper (i dunno what its called)... ok.. the list goes on.. but ya... oh man....

That's no fun. Was he a volunteer or a certified official? i hope he was a volunteer... at least he was trying to help?

God, I hope he was a volunteer...if he was an official...man they aren't teaching them right at all...or passing them waaaay too easy

At a meet I went to last week, they had open pit for high jump, where anybody could take their jumps anytime they wanted and they kept raising and lowering the bar. And they scratched one of our girls because she ran through 3 times, which you are allowed to do as long as you dont pass the time limit. Also in that meet we didnt START pole vault until the 2 mile (2nd to last event), and we ran boys and girls jv and varsity together!

I recently took the class and test to become an official. In my experience, everything was explained quite thoroughly except the pole vault. There were 2 instructors for my class, neither of which new very much about the pole vault. In fact, when we got around to it, they asked me to do some of the explaining. It's unfortunate, but that's the reality of the situation. Although, being an official is sort of a thankless job. Many certified officials have to volunteer, because the schools cannot pay them. That's why people who do know something about the pole vault (vaulters, coaches, parents) should contribute to our event and become certified officials. That's probably the best way the officiating can improve for us.
Not all are bad; there are some very good pole vault officials here on the west coast that we appreciate very much and should definitely be thanked for their services.
