Photos of free take offs - Got any?

Here is mine from 1982. The pole was 145lb or 150lb 460(15'1"), grip around 4.20 (13' 9"). The plant was total crap, but please note this was my second year of vaulting and just after 10 months off the field.

And here is one from this year (taken from video). Of course, grip is much lower than 30 years ago, the plant is still crappy, but you get the point.

Free takeoff was intention not accident. Back then we call it just takeoff.
I don't understand why someone wants intentionally take-off under. Even then, my back could told me unmistakably whether I am under or not.

Haha! Well, I'm still his one of is coaches and a lot of his friends are pole vaulters within the team. Maybe, someday?

Here are some pictures of two of my athletes in competition from full run ups. I know the image quality is low, they were taken off my video camera.

The first is an athlete that had been vaulting for about two months. I think this displays how simple it can be to get a brand new vaulter to pre jump. The second is of another vaulter who has been jumping for several years.

Good comment -it is certainly true if Ashton Eaton taught himself to jump like that as would seem to be the case.

Exactly. If you are taught from day 1 then it is a lot easier than breaking a bad habit. I am kind of stuck right now because I am teaching a decathlete that is a good long jumper how to vault and he has a massive pre jump. He is back to three lefts and I gave him a 12' 170 to hold at the top to start bending (he is 172ish) and he jumped right over the top of it and landed in back of pit with no bend. These guys with massive jumps are awesome vaulters but a pain to get started because all the beginner poles are too small!
