World champ injured as pole snaps
Sapa-AFP | 30 June, 2011 07:55
World champion pole vaulter Anna Rogowska needed stitches in her hand after her pole broke during a meeting at Sopot, Poland, on Wednesday, according to the domestic news agency PAP.
The pole snapped at the moment she took off as she tried to clear the bar at 4.70metres.
The European indoor champion needed several stitches and is expected to be out of action for three weeks, jeopardising her chances of retaining her world title at this year’s World Championships in South Korea.
On June 18, Rogowska and the German Silke Spiegelburg set the best jumps of the year, both of them going over at 4.75m in a meeting in Stockholm.

Re: Rogowska injured as pole snaps
Is this usually due to the pole snapping at the grip height (physical shrapnel) or due to some sort of shock wave sent up the pole ripping the skin apart?

I would say it was due to the skin ripping apart rather than from shrapnel

Re: Rogowska injured as pole snaps
More than likely the pole didn't break where she was gripping. I had my hand split open on the palm from the vibration from a pole break 10" from my bottom hand. The energy put into the poles is amazing and when there is pole failure the enery has to go somewhere. I know of several athletes that this has happened to. When mine happened, it also fractured a knuckle. I had to have 2 pins put in.

Re: Rogowska injured as pole snaps
It seems that the pole broke about 1 meter below the left hand.

She seems to jump on very stiff poles, though...

Re: Rogowska injured as pole snaps
Seems to have broken slight "upper" middle… hard to say if it broke at the top corner of the sail piece (one of the most venerable points) not knowing where the sail is positioned.
The pole looks a little more bent at the bottom half rather than top or middle….. and the break probably happened as the pole pushed into the back top of the box stopping the "roll in" and creating more force at the break point.…
