Megan Sather, a 2010 graduate from West Fargo High School, recently signed a letter of intent to enroll at Jamestown College for the fall semester.

Sather, who plans to major in biology, will participate in track and field at Jamestown. Last season with the Packers, she hit a personal-best mark of 9-feet in the pole vault. She also finished fourth place in the East Region Tournament and tied for 12th at the state tournament.

“Megan had a good senior year in the pole vault for the Packers,” said Jim Clark, women’s track and field coach for the Jimmies. “Megan is a good student and an outgoing and personable young lady from a very nice family. She will fit in well at Jamestown College.”

Megan’s parents are Mark and Laurie Sather of West Fargo.

Langford signs with Missouri Southern

Bronaugh High School graduate Vanessa Langford has signed to pole vault for the Lions of Missouri Southern State University. The Lady Lions have won three consecutive MIAA outdoor championships and finished 10th in the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. Langford is the only Class 1 vaulter in the state of Missouri to clear 11 feet and is one of two pole vaulters recruited to replace graduating senior and All-American, Ciara Lipsey. Libby Cooper didn't begin pole vaulting until she was a sophomore at Chambersburg.
But it was her participation in another sport -- gymnastics -- that helped Cooper clear a hurdle every high school athlete dreams of.
Cooper recently announced she will join the track and field team at High Point (N.C.) University, a Division I school.
"I did gymnastics for about eight or nine years and I had an upperclassman friend who also did gymnastics and pole vaulting," Cooper said. "She said the move was pretty easy for her, so that's how I got started."
Cooper was a very consistent performer for the Trojans.
In her senior season, she finished fourth at the Mid Penn Conference meet and ninth at the District 3 Championships. Cooper was also third at both the Tim Cook Invitational and Shippensburg U. Invitational.
A year earlier, she was fourth at Mid Penns and seventh at the District 3 meet.
Cooper was the area's top girls pole vaulter each of the last two years and has a personal-best height of 10 feet.
"I think the biggest thing is she was also a gymnast and a lot of times they make good pole vaulters because they've already been doing the moves," Trojan coach Chris Monheim said. "It's a natural event for them to go into. Plus, you have to have good strength and speed and she has both of those."

Mike Esposito. She was one of three pole vaulters brought in and Cooper's personal-best height is right in line with the other two.
High Point was fifth at the Big South Outdoor Championships. Former Trojan Corey Grove is a senior-to-be on the men's track roster.
On the school's website, Esposito said, "We have a very balanced class ... We have also upgraded our scoring potential in the pole vault and jumps."

Azzalina to vault for Tiffin
Eaton High School's school record holder in the girls' pole vault will try to replicate the success of her high school career at the collegiate level.

Ronni Azzalina will attend Tiffin University this fall, where she'll compete in the women's pole vault in track and field for the Dragons, an NCAA Division II program.

"I chose Tiffin because it's a small school, and I like the feeling of the closeness of everything and everyone," Azzalina said. "The women's track and field program is really good, and they compete in a lot of Division I meets."

Azzalina also had offers from Division I schools Eastern Michigan and Detroit, among others, but said she didn't like the environment at Detroit, and Eastern Michigan, located in Ypsilanti, was too far away.

"(The proximity of Tiffin) to home was close enough, but far enough away for what I was looking for," she said.

Azzalina graduated from Eaton as the school record holder in the pole vault, clearing 10'6", a record she broke four times, three of which were her own marks.

"I worked really hard to accomplish that, and I look forward to working hard at Tiffin to try and beat my (personal best)," Azzalina said.

According to Eaton track and field coach Randy McKinney, Tiffin is getting an athlete who has a lot of room to improve at the college level.

"Ronni's a very talented vaulter who has a lot of room to improve at the next level. When she gets to the next level and understands how competitive it's going to be, that'll be that extra push she needs to get to that level," McKinney said.

"She's going to be a nice asset for their track program. She seemed to make a really good connection with her coaches already, and that's a real plus. A lot of kids go in and somewhat know their coaches, but she's had a lot of contact with them.

"She's a very focused, goal-oriented person, and she's very excited about Tiffin. She spent a lot of time looking at the university from an academic standpoint, and they're getting a strong academic person who loves to pole vault who just has to make that transition to become a college student and athlete, and she's very excited about that opportunity."

Added Azzalina: "I learn really easily, so they'll be able to coach me up. I'm pretty much a blank slate. What I've done so far is just off pure athletic ability. I still have room to learn all the little things you pick up."

Azzalina qualified to state as a junior, but fell one place short of a return trip to Columbus, losing a jump-off for a state qualifying spot at the Division II Dayton regional in May. She said the pressure of those experiences will help prepare her for the transition.

"But my coaches tell me everything I've been through is nothing compared to what I'll go through there," Azzalina said. "State was a big meet and very intimidating, but that's like every little meet we go to. I'm really bad under pressure, which is why I didn't make it back to state this year, but since I've already been through those kind of situations, hopefully I can use that experience and get through them in the future."

Azzalina, who attended Miami Valley CTC, graduated with a 3.3 GPA. She intends to major in Cyber Defense and Internet Security.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina track and field program has signed 19 athletes to national letters-of-intent to attend and compete at the university beginning in the fall, according to an announcement by head coach Curt Kraft.



Kathryn Warner, Pole Vault/Hurdles, Batavia, Ill. (Batavia HS)
Warner joins the program capable of scoring points both on the track and in the field. She has reached 11 feet in the pole vault and is the 3A state champion in the 300 hurdles. Warner also competes in the 100 hurdles and should help the team in several areas.




Kraft on Warner: "Kathryn is likely going to be the fastest pole vaulter in the conference this season. Most people don't realize that she won the state 300IH title with an injured hip. She certainly exceeded expectations and now that she's healthy, she'll be able to learn the skill of pole vaulting. We're looking forward to some quick progress."
Henry Johnson, Pole Vault, Smithfield N.C. (Selma HS)
A native of Smithfield, N.C., Johnson brings his vast vaulting talents to the program. With the 2010 4A state championship and a 14-8 personal-best mark to his credit, he adds great depth to the already deep pole vault group for the Pirates.

Kraft on Johnson: "Henry is an extremely athletic young man that made huge improvements from his junior to senior year. As a former football player and wrestler, he has tremendous body awareness and his runway mechanics are beautiful. He will be knocking on the door of a talent-loaded C-USA pole vault corps this season."

During the past three years she has established herself as the best female pole vaulter in school history, as well as one of the best in all of Kansas.

She will enter her senior campaign as one of the favorites to win the Class 5A state championship, but whether or not she reaches that plateau this spring will not impact if she receives a college scholarship. That part is already taken care of.

Bowman signed a letter of intent Thursday, Feb. 4, to pole vault for Pittsburg State University.

She said she was sold on the program after taking a campus visit.

“I got to meet some of the vaulters while I was down there, and they were all really welcoming,” she said. “The coach (Russ Jewett) was fantastic. I really liked him and felt like I could get along with him right off the bat.”

Bowman said she considered Emporia State, Kansas University and Kansas State, but Pittsburg State offered the academic programs she was interested in. She said she wants to pursue a degree in broadcasting with a minor in business.

“Pitt State offered vaulting and the major, so that’s what sold me,” she said.

It also offered two other things that appealed to Bowman. The school is only about a two-hour drive from Shawnee, so it’s close to home. Plus, it offers her the opportunity to step right in and compete.

Bowman will arrive on campus with the ability to challenge school records. The indoor pole-vaulting record is 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches. The outdoor record is 12-7.

Bowman has a personal best mark of 11-6, which she set at the regional championships last year.

“I’m very excited that the goals are within reach. I have to build up to them,” she said.

Although she expects to perform at a high level for the Gorillas, Bowman knows she will have some stiff competition from her future teammates. Gardner-Edgerton graduates Emmy Lehman and Tara Falkner — former prep opponents of Bowman’s — compete for PSU, and another GEHS vaulter is expected to join the program in the fall.

With her college decision made, Bowman now is turning her full focus to pursuing a state title this spring. She placed ninth at state as a freshman, third as a sophomore and second as a junior.

Bowman has spent the winter training three days a week at Xtreme Athletics, an indoor vaulting facility in Overland Park that’s operated by former Kansas State vaulter Doug Lytle.

Her goals for the season are to clear 12-6 and win a state title.

“I definitely think it’s realistic,” Bowman said. “The state (meet) record is 11-2 I believe, so that’s also within reach.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State track and field head coach Robert Gary announced the signing of six student-athletes for the 2010-2011 academic year Monday, a diverse collection of talent that includes one of Ohio's most accomplished high school sprinter/hurdlers in years and a national junior college champion.

The 2009 OHSAA DIII indoor champion and 2010 indoor and outdoor champ in the pole vault, Marshall is a multi-event talent who could compete in several events for the Scarlet and Gary. The Buckeyes are hopeful that Marshall will be an immediate contributor in the pole vault, an area they are looking to capitalize on at the Big Ten championships. In addition to being a two-time state champ, Marshall is a former AAU indoor champ and Stark County record holder in the vault.

Coach Flood, GCU head track and field coach, announced the signing of eight female athletes for the 2010-2011 season.


The lone outsider is incoming freshman Keegan Williams from Shawnee-Maranatha Academy in Kansas. She is a three-time 2A Kansas State pole vault champion (2008, 2009 and 2010). Her personal best stands at 11 feet 4 inches. Also an accomplished student, Williams was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council Vice-President.
