Rogowska gets pole vault gold as Isinbayeva flops - Update
Posted : Mon, 17 Aug 2009 19:08:58 GMT
Author : DPA
Berlin - Russian pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva was reduced to an ordinary human on Monday when she no-heighted in the world championship final and Poland's Anna Rogowska took the gold. Rogowska won with 4.75 metres, with compatriot Monika Pyrek and American Chelsea Johnson sharing silver with 4.65m.
The two-time world and Olympic champion Isinbayeva, 27, failed on the first attempt over the opening height of 4.75m, moved on to 4.80m but also failed to make that height on her final two attempts.
Isinbayeva buried her head in her face in disbelief as she shared the fate of men's legend Sergey Bubka who famously no-heighted at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
The Russian last failed to win a major event when she came third at the 2003 worlds in Paris.
She won Olympic gold 2004 and 2008, world titles 2005 and 2007 and the European crown in 2006. Isinbayeva has set 26 world records in her career, with her leading mark indoors at 5.00m and outdoors at 5.05m.
But she was not as dominant as in the past this year although her 4.85m clearance was the world lead. A few weeks ago she suffered a rare defeat, losing to Rogowska on countback.
Rogowska had just one foul on 4.65m and cleared 4.75 on her first attempt which turned out to be the winning jump, the biggest career success for the 2004 Olympic bronze medallist.
Johnson and Pyrek got 4.65m on their first attempt but got no higher as they shared silver. German Silke Spiegelburg missed a medal in fourth place as she took two attempts to clear 4.65m.

BERLIN – After dominating the pole vault event in the last four championships, Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva suffered a shocking defeat at the World Championships, after coming up blank on Monday.
Coming into the competition with the bar set at 4.75m, the Russian failed to clear a single try and will leave Berlin empty handed. She struggled earlier this season with injuries and was expected to eased her way into the competition.
However, that didn’t happened and the focus was quickly turned away from her and unto the medallists who were more than overjoyed.
Winning the event was Poland’s Anna Rogowska with a 4.75m clearance, while another Poland vaulter Monika Pyrek and American Chelsea Johnson were joint silver medallists with a mark of 4.65m.
"I am not sure right now," an emotional Rogowska said. "I am shock that I won this competition. I felt I would have won a medal but not the gold. I was surprise Yelena Isinbayeva did zero metres.
"I was sure she would clear 4.75m, so I am shock."

OK I hate hate hate the IAAF for not saying who said which quotes here, very irresponsible journalism *sigh*

[This is either Pyrek or Johnson]
[This must be Pyrek]
[This must be Isinbayeva]

Gold - Anna ROGOWSKA, POL
If somebody told me in the morning that I was going to get a gold medal today, I would just smile. Everybody was so surprised when Isinbaeva hit the bar. I still do not believe I won. Maybe tomorrow I will realize it. Maybe I hoped for silver but gold is a big surprise for me. Once, I was thinking about how it would be nice if there are 2 Polish girls taking medals from the world championships but it was just a dream. Now it happened. Not everything was ideal but this is the new period in my life. I had just three targets this year. Two of them are already fulfilled. I wanted to win the Polish championships, to bring a medal from Berlin and now my target is new national record.
[This is either Pyrek or Johnson]
It feels great right now, kind of a shock. I've been 100% confident. My aim was to make every bar at first attempt and that's what I did. Honestly I feel bad for Elena. She's still the greatest pole vaulter of all time. Everybody has a bad day. I was able to capitalize on it. That's why pole vault is so interesting. You never know what is going to happen.
[This must be Pyrek]
I thank all the people here for supporting us. It helped us a lot. I was very nervous before the final because my last competitions were not that good. I wish I jumped 4,75 because than I would be even more satisfied. It is amazing that we both get medals for Poland. Nobody counted with such a scenario. I have to thank to all the people who are supporting me during in critical moments. I thank my mother and my brother who came here to support me.
[This must be Isinbayeva]
I have no proper explanation for what happened today. Everything was perfect, I was confident and I cleared 4.70 during the heat up. When I was laying on the ground and concentrating, I imagined my victory and good jumps, not defeat. Something like this happened 9 years ago, I did not expect it. I do not regret I did not start at lower heights because even if I cleared 4.65 it would mean nothing. I think it happened because it just must have happened. This competition was important to me but i hope that will encourage me to be great in London. I hope I will recover from this.

Event Report - Women's Pole Vault - Final
Poland's Anna Rogowska celebrates her gold medal in the women's Pole Vault final in Berlin (Getty Images)
relnews
What it may have lacked in terms of pure quality it more than made up for in drama as Yelena Isinbayea relinquished her four-year reign as World champion by disappointingly no-heighting as Anna Rogowska seized her chance to take gold for Poland with a best effort of 4.75m.
Behind, the silver medal was shared by Rogowska's countrywoman Monika Pyrek and suprise podium placer Chelsea Johnson of the USA. Both securing their piece of precious metal with first time clearances at 4.65m.
But first Isibayeva. She was bidding to become only the third woman in history to land three successive World titles - shot putter Astrid Kumbernuss and heptathlete Carolina Kluft were the others - and she was an undoubted favourite.
However, she has lacked her usual fizz and sparkle during a lacklustre season where her best was 4.85m - some 0.20 short of her world record - and in her last pre-World Championships competition she suffered defeat at the hands of Rogowska in London. The word was out that the 2008 IAAF Female Athlete of the Year was vulnerable.
On a beautiful, balmy Berlin night the first casualty was Russia's European Indoor Champion Yuliya Golubchikova, who had the misfortune of taking a heavy fall during warm-up and did not take her place in the final.
Four women exited the competition at 4.55m as German duo Anna Battke and Kristina Gadschiew waved auf wiedersehen to the crowd and the Russian pair Aleksandra Kiryashova and Tatyana Polnova were also forced to pack their poles away.
At 4.65m Pyrek, the 2005 World silver medallist, and Johnson managed first time clearances, which we didn't know at the time but was ultimately good enough for silver medals. Home favourite Silke Spiegelburg attained the standard at the second time of asking as did Rogowska. However, British record holder Kate Dennison and an out-of-sorts World No.2 Fabiana Murer of Brazil failed to clear at this height.
Ten centimetres higher and Rogowska wriggled over at 4.75m at the first time of asking. It was a signifcant clearance, but with Isinbayeva still to enter few would have predicted it would prove the gold medal winning vault.
Exactly 90 minutes into the competition the defending champion finally made her entrance. However, her first attempt at 4.75 was a huge anti-climax as she mistimed her effort and bailed out of a full vault. She shook her head and gave a rueful smile. She decided to pass and move up to 4.80m.
A visibly upset Spiegelburg failed to deliver Germany's dream of a pole vault medal as she could not negotiate 4.75m and Johnson, too, found that height, which would have been a personal best by 0.02, too much.
Pyrek gambled after two failures at 4.75m and moved on up to 4.80m.
With the whole complexion of the competition so finely balanced Isinbayeva made her second appearance of the night. However, if she was going to win gold it would be the hard way as she came down on top of the bar. She clutched her hands to her face in anguish while lying horizontal on the pole vault bed. The double Olympic champion was now drinking from the last chance saloon.
Next up Rogowska at 4.80, and although Isinbayeva could not bear to watch - as she sat with her tracksuit top shrouded over her head - the Polish 2004 Olympic bronze medallist could not clear.
To Isibayeva's nailbiting final attempt. To be fair, her concentration may have been rattled by the conclusion of the women's 3000m steeplechase final. However, she once again hoplessly mistimed the vault, landed on top of the bar and her dream of a hat-trick of title lay in tatters.
Rogowska skipped with joy and sprinted to the crowd to take a Polish flag. The fact that is was the lowest mark to win a global title for six years mattered to the gold medallist not one jot.

A HUGE CONGRATS TO CHELSEA AND JAN.... i was fortunate enough to catch up with both of them at usas this year and jan was saying shes just dialed in right now, seems that he was right on!
Also i think it should be pointed out, that ISI is a true champion, even in defeat. She made no excuses, no whining. Obviously she was upset but she took the time to talk to the reporters and I think she deserves a tremendous amount of respect for being a great sportmans (or sportswoman as the case may be)

Absolutely. I was getting on here to post that I wanted to give her props for not making excuses. It's the pole vault, sometimes it just doesn't come together just right in your first three attempts.
