They had a good headwind but he opened at 5.50 and blew through first attempt and put 18" on his 2nd. Was over 5.73 with room but barely nicked it on his 3rd. 1st was a bail and 2nd San Martian funk.

Nebraska's Willer ties for national lead in pole vault

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- After competing in the hammer throw and 5,000-meter run on Friday, the Nebraska track and field team returned to John McDonnell Field on Saturday morning for the second and final day of the John McDonnell Invitational.
The Huskers battled through cold and rainy conditions early, including a 90-minute rain delay that started at roughly 2:35 p.m., before the sun came out and the rain subdued for the late afternoon and evening events.

Over two days, the men and women combined to produce 37 regional-qualifying marks, highlighted by sophomore Natalie Willer tying for the national lead in the women's pole vault.

In one of the more interesting stories on Saturday, the women's pole vault was moved indoors to the Randal Tyson Track Center due to the heavy rain.

Willer and Arkansas' Katie Stripling both posted a nation-leading vault of 14-3 1/4, topping the previous-leading mark of 14-1 1/4, held by three different vaulters.

For regional-qualifying purposes, the NCAA permits meet officials to move the pole vault and high jump to an indoor facility for safety reasons.

Willer, a native of Elkhorn, was clean through her first four bars, 12-7 1/2, 13-1 1/2, 13-6 1/4 and 13-11, before taking all three attempts to clear 14-3 1/4. Willer and Stripling then both attacked 14-5 1/4, but neither was able to clear. Overall, Willer finished second to Stripling, with the Razorback vaulter clearing 14-3 1/4 on one less attempt. Even though the vault was recorded during the outdoor season, Willer's vault breaks her own indoor school record of 14-0, set on Jan. 24, 2009 at the Conference Challenge in Lincoln.

STANFORD--Trying to will herself and the Cal track and field team to victory at the 115th Big Meet on Saturday, senior pole vaulter Katie Morgan brought an intensity that was fitting for one of the biggest athletic rivalries in the Bay Area.

In an epic battle against Stanford freshman Katerina Stefanidi that had to be decided by a jump-off -- pole vaulting's take on sudden-death overtime -- Morgan captured the win after an exhausting 15 attempts.

"It was the best competition I have ever seen in any event at the Big Meet," said former Cal high jumper Ed Wright, who was in attendance at Cobb Track and Angell Field to spur on his old teammates.

The showdown between Morgan, last year's NCAA outdoor champion in the pole vault, and Stefanidi, a former national record-holder for the pole vault in her native Greece, captured the attention of nearly everyone at the Big Meet and took so long that it delayed the meet by nearly an hour.

"I've been in something like this once in high school, but yeah, never at this level, so you bring a lot more energy to the higher bars," Morgan said. "It was amazing."

Morgan, still recovering from an injury sustained two months ago, almost didn't get a chance to go for the win because her coach was concerned about risking the senior's health after so many jumps.

"My coach almost pulled me a couple times, but I just said 'no,'" Morgan said. "It's the Big Meet, and I'm a senior. Also, coming off an injury kind of made me more motivated. I feel like I have to prove to everybody and myself that I don't suck."

Unfortunately for the Bears, Morgan's success was not matched by her teammates in enough events. The Cardinal took the men's competition by a score of 83-80 and the women's meet by a score of 92-71.
