If I remember correctly, there have been several threads discussing the fact that in a lot of cases, head track coaches send the less accomplished athletes over to the pole vault pit to give it a try. Well? We all know that we need the best athletes in the pole vault. This doesn't say that the guy with heart that hasn't yet developed physically should be over looked. What you might consider is break your athletes down into vaulting and non vaulting athletes. What I mean by this is turn those that don't want to jump in to administrators. They can do pit set up, be pole organizers, crossbar putter-uppers, standard adjusters, clip board carriers (to document the Jumping vaulters statistics, times and results) video takers and editors, etc. If all they have to do is show up to get them an A or "complete", then give them a reason that is non-physical to show up and yet, be productive for both them and the program. A simple question like, "OK, who wants to jump and be good, and who doesn't"? Those that want to will get most of your attention. Those that don 't then get to be the event administrators or "assistant to the assistant coach". I'll bet, if you presented this scenario, you'd probably get some takers which in the end will reduce your dead weight and help your program. Keep in mind that Alan Launder never was the best pole vaulter. He does know how to coach it though. Maybe some of your (what you perceive as) dead weight might fit into this category thus adding to the "win win" of this kind of proposal. Later...........Mike

Hmmm...I like that proposal. Our head coach is always busy because he has to overlook the whole program, so maybe this could work. Thanks for the idea.

My coach came back from big bear today.
And he gave me the go ahead to set the pit up, I just need to make sure that I get this one guy to come supervise.
So, if all goes well tomorrow, I will vault again!
