Wake-up time, Isinbayeva?

Things are heating up in the women's Olympic field. Murer's 8" (20cm) improvement on her previous seasonal best and a 14cm bettering of her Brazilian NR of 2006; Pyrek's 4.75 her best since 2006; Stuczynski's American record of 4.90; Schwartz's 4.72, a 12 cm bettering of her PR in 2004; Stacy's 4.70 her best since her 2004 world record; and Golubchikova's improving her 2007 PR to 4.73--all promise a better-than-ever competition at Beijing.

Don't forget Chelsea Johnson 4.73! We should be able to send a women's team to Beijing that can all make finals and have a shot at medaling.

Wake-up Time

Unread postby roger/over » Mon Jun 30, 2008 6:45 pm

Thanks to rainbowgirl and ilios for noting omissions/errors in my list of red-hot vaulters in the early season. I guess I missed Pyrek's 4.82 last season because I had switched to my national records files and Monica's 4.82 at Stuttgart was a centimeter short of Rogowska's Polish record. Checking the Stuttgart results, though, I saw that Feofanova was third with the same height as Pyrek. There's another that will bear watching, although no results reported yet in the outdoor season.

From those national records files, though, these new NRs in the 2008 outdoor season:

BRA 4.80 Fabiana Murer
BDI 3.70 Latitia Berthier
CUB 4.50 Yarisley Silva
IRL 3.95 Zöe Brown
KOR 4.11 Choi Yun-Hee
PAK 2.80 Humaira Akmal
PHI 4.11 Deborah Samson
POR 4.35 Sandra-Helene Tavares
SIN 3.60 Rachel Yang Bing Jie
SRI 2.95 Anne Piyulma
USA 4.90 Jennifer Stuczynski

We have a whole group of 470 plus women, and many of them seem to be ready to go higher. Even with all that said, that many national records in one season is crazy. It is going to get pretty exciting on both the men's and women's sides come China-time.

Unless she's made some significant technical improvements over the past few years, I don't think her amazing athleticism alone can take her back to the Olympic podium unless conditions somehow favour her. I haven't seen any of her jumps from after 2005 though, so for all I know maybe she's on the right track.

In spite of all the great height improvements on the female side of vault, let's not forget that Yelena has ice in her veins and hasn't lost in ages. That being said, I think if anyone can take her down, it's Jenn. Six feet tall, great technique, a proven competitor and now the heights to boot!

Good luck to all these ladies in their quest for Olmpic glory. It promises to be the best competition women's vault has ever seen.
