I built a 3' wide runway with 12' wolmanized 4X4s with a lap joint cut on each end with a 1/2" hole drilled in them and drove an 8" nail through them to keep in place. Laid them out using a string to keep staight and a level. Bury some of them built up the dirt on others. Then I filled the interior with crushed limestone 1/2" minus with the fines. That mean it is full of dust. Once you wet it and tamp it down it becomes quite solid. I then rolled out 1/2" rubber runway I bought online. Its nice because you can always roll the runway back and maintain the gravel if low spots develop. Not including the rubber runway it only cost around $200.
