ok well, not to sound obnoxious but if i was easily intimidated i wouldnt want to get so good at this. its been 10 days and i have been thinking about pole vaulting every second, researching, waiting for practice. i was so mad when i couldnt practice today. i really want to get good at this and im willing to do anything to get really good. i want to move back, grip up, swing, get inverted and all of that. i also know that this sport is very technical and id be foolish to surpass any of the key points that would help me get technically perfect. im athletic, strong, smart, fast, and dedicated enough to be good, i just need help on how to get technically great (the reason im on here). so please any workout that you do if your jumping great or any extra advice, but i really hope your not telling me not to move my grip up just because id be intimidated.

It's not an embarassing thing, being intimidated about moving your grip up that is... it can cause MAJOR psychological problems sometimes. I remember myself not too long ago not being able to grip 13', not because I wasn't taking off or running well enough to do so, but just because the new spot I was taking off from felt so uncomfortable I just ran through most of the time, or landed in the box...

I'd really recommend you buy the book Beginner to Bubka if you are serious about studying the sport. I have it for sale in the Pole Vault Power Store.

The book is 310 pages of text and pictures, I guarantee you there is a ton of new material in there you haven't read before.

I'd get the book and the DVD, because if you get the book, the DVD is only $20 more and the shipping cost does not increase. It's helpful to have video demonstrations of some of the subjects in the book.

Thanks a lot im sure ill get it then, i just had another question, i have a home gym in my basement and i have a pull-up bar and i was trying the tuck ups and leg raises, and i dont know if i wasnt used to it, but my hands were dead. its on a metal squat rack. ive never been on a gymnastic high bar so i dont know what they are made of, i guess what im getting at is, are my hands supposed to be numb after those two drills?

It's just another thing you'll get used to. Invest in some chalk and gymnastics grips too, they should help! :D

To answer your grip question, I don't know. Video would be helpful.

I'm a high school sophomore, and could easily be going 13' + at counties this season.

My PR is only 10'6'', and it has been for a while, however I've been in a psych rut for about a month and a half, and I'm just starting to emerge with some halfway decent jumping up around 13'6'' - 14' when my legs are nice and fresh...

Try to get some video up for an idea of what else you should be working on, and to see what you should do about your grip!
