Blue Devils track teams off and running
Wa-Hi hosts Kennewick and Southridge in a non-league track meet.

WALLA WALLA -- The Wa-Hi boys and girls track and field teams started their season on Thursday afternoon on a chilly Martin Field, hosting Kennewick and Southridge in a non-league meet.

The boys garnered 10 individual and two team first-place finishes, and the girls recorded two individual winners, with half of their team competing at the Pendleton Invite.

Michael Najera and Jordan Ness led the way for the boys. Najera won three individual events and was the anchor on the 4x400 relays that finished first, and Ness won two events while anchoring the 4x100 relay team that crossed the finish line first.

Najera won the 200 meters with a time of 23.61, the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.76 and the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 43.58.

He beat out Southridge's Todd Allen in the final stretch of the 4x400 relays after Ness, Kyle Jones and Andrew Bloom raced in front of him, with a sprint at the finish to earn Wa-Hi's best time of 3:38.19.

Ness narrowly edged Stephen Swanson in the 100 dash by six-one-hundreths of a second with a time of 11.83 and won the 400 meters at 52.88. The 4x100 relay team of Justin Piek, Bloom and Spencer Hessler set up Ness to cross ahead of Swanson at the finish line with a time of 44.89.

Michael Higgins won the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:19.85 for Wa-Hi, while the Blue Devils earned top spots in four field events.
Ethan Hill's discus throw of 148 feet was by far the longest, Kyle Jones tossed the javelin 151'7", Ryne Eggers' high jump of 5'10" and Brock Anderson's triple jump of 41'6.75" were tops in both events.

Wa-Hi dominated the triple jump with Piek, Steven Patton, Eggers and Justin Weeks following Anderson for the top five spots.

Other finishers of note for the Blue Devils included Piek and Bloom coming in third and fourth in the 100, William Thorne, Jorge Garcia and Hessler placed third, fourth and fifth in the 200 and Bloom came in third in the 400 meter run.

Blake Lewis finished third in the 800 and Robby Wall was second in the 1600.

Cody Clark's shot put of 44'4" was second, while Kyle Eggers' discus throw of 119'2" was third and Luke Nelson's javelin throw of 139'6" finished second.

Chester Holt was second in the pole vault, with Piek and Bryan Clothier finishing second and third in the long jump.

Wa-Hi boys coach Harvey Wellington was happy with how the team competed.

"We had a lot of young kids step up," said Wellington. "Michael Najera had a phenomenal day -- Jordan Ness turned in an outstanding performance. Our relay teams stepped up again.

"Chester Holt had an outstanding jump on the pole vault," continued Wellington. "We had some excellent distance people -- Robby Wall in the mile and Michael Higgins in the two-mile. All-around, we had a great team performance."

On the girl's side, Kailee Davisson won the 400 with a time of 1:03.46 and McKhayla Morris won the 300 low hurdles with a time of 54.91 and was third in the 100 high hurdles.

Shaylee Hill and Shelby Stein came in fourth and fifth in the 100, Davisson was third in the 200, Heather Goodwin was third in the 800 and Emma Burgess was second in the 3200 meters.

Haley Hedine finished fourth in the 100 high hurdles, third in the 300 low hurdles and third in the long jump.

Gabby Anderson was fifth in the 100 high hurdles and third in the javelin.

Courtney Phipps finished third in the shot put, Amy Wolski was second in the discus, Madison Baxter finished tied for second in the high jump and Alexandria Watts was second in the pole vault.

"The kids competed very well today," said Wa-Hi girls coach Eric Hisaw. "It was kind of hard, because we had half of the girls team at Pendleton and half of the team here. It was a great opportunity to see a lot of the young kids compete in their first varsity meet and at the same time, we saw a lot of the older kids show them how to do things."

Wa-Hi travel to Wenatchee Wednesday against the Panthers and Richland in their first league meet.

TigerCards prevail at Class B meet
Prescott-Waitsburg athletes win five events en route to the meet win in Clarkston.



CLARKSTON -- Prescott-Waitsburg athletes won five events on the way to winning the Class B track meet here on Wednesday.

The TigerCards' first-place finishers included James Leher in the shot put and the discus, Morgan Baker in the 110-meter hurdles, Josh Smith in the 300 hurdles, and the 400 relay team.

P-W scored a total of 158 points for the top spot, Pomeroy placed third with 59 points, and DeSales place in the No. 4 spot with 50 points.

DeSales' John Notturno won the pole vault in the boys competition.

With Caris Cole winning the shot put and the javelin, and Ellie Bartlow winning the discus, Precott-Waitsburg placed second in the girls competition.

The TigerCards tallied a team total of 78 points for the victory.

"We won the three throws, our strongest events, both hurdles and the 4x1 relay," P-W coach Ron Huntington said. "We had strong perfromances from James Lehr, a sohomore.
"And Caris Cole was our top performer for the girls," he said.

Asotin won the girls meet with a total of 137 points,

Pomeroy placed third with 59 points and Dayton placed fifth with 50 points.

DeSales finished in the seventh spot with 28 points.

Other area top finishers in the boys competition included Pomeroy's Eddie Bartlow, who won the long jump and the high jump, and Tyler Reisdorph, who won the 400.

In the girls competition, area top finishers included Dayton's Kellisa Owens in the triple jump, and Kelsey Warren in the long jump.

DeSales' Beth Notturno won the girls pole vault.

"Our young kids got their feet wet at this meet, and now we're off and running," DeSales coach Mike Michels said. "Now we just work hard to improve. We want to get better every week."

Morton Girls Heat Up in the Cold, Fall to White Pass by Single Point

TOUTLE -- The weather turned cold as soon as the track meet started here Thursday, but the Huskies turned in a solid performance, Morton coach Nathan Ross said.

The Morton girls lost by a mere one point to White Pass, as the Panthers finished with 102 points and the Huskies ended with 101. Toutle Lake’s girls came in third with 66, Napavine had 44, and Adna finished with five.

Marissa Nyman (13.18) and Annie Schinnell (13.37) took first and second in the 100 meters, respectively. Nyman also finished first in the long jump with a leap of 15-feet, 6-inches, and Schinnell took first in both the 400 (1:05.88) and 200 (28.21).

In the 3,200, Morton’s Robi Nilson (13:48) and Etta Morris (13:49) took second and third, and the Huskies’ Kristen Sumers won in the shot put with a throw of 32 feet.

Morris added a second-place finishes in the 1,600 (6:22) and 800 (2:55) while Sumers added a third place score in the discus with a throw of 62-6.

Morton’s 4-by-400 team of Alyssa Tran, Nilson, Morris and Schinnell took first with a time of 4:50.

Bickleton freshman top pole vaulter at Yakima invite

YAKIMA - Bickleton High School tracksters traveled to the Papa Wells Invite in Yakima this past Saturday, squaring off against 23 other schools.
"We were able to break through and get some high places and establish some new (personal records)," said Bickleton Coach Darrell Lang.
Bickleton freshman Star Kibby placed first in the pole vault, catapulting 8' 3" in her first high school track meet.
"Star had a great day, considering we had limited pole vault practice during the week...," said Lang.
Bickleton's Eric Hess earned second and third place honors in the discus and shotput. In the discus, he set a personal record, throwing 138'1". Said Lang, "Eric continues to improve each week and has his eyes set on the 140' mark." In the shotput, Hess threw 44'7.5" for the third place finish. He also tied for fourth in the high jump, leaping 5'6".
Teammate Edgar Molena placed fourth in the discus, throwing 130'5".
Patrick Maeder placed third in the pole vault, vaulting 11'6". Lang said, "(He) had another strong vaulting day, just missing the 12' barrier, but establishing a new (personal record)." Lang described the third place vault as "gravy," adding that Maeder didn't practice the pole vault all week due to inclement weather and a sore arm.
Andrew Venema placed fourth for Bickleton in the high jump at 5'6".
Lady Pirate Alejandra Molena threw the discus 99' for a fifth place finish. Teammate Katelynn Clinton placed sixth in the high jump, 4' 8".
The next meet for Bickleton is this Tuesday at Benton City, but the seniors will not compete as it's senior project presentation night at Bickleton. All the Pirates should compete this Saturday at Goldendale for the Simcoe Invite.

Tumwater tops Black Hills at track

TUMWATER - Tumwater coach Rich Brown figures the secret is out.



His T-Bird track team is the real deal.

Tumwater boys and girls teams remained undefeated by defeating crosstown rival Black Hills.

"We're young and we've got potential," Brown said. "But I don't think we're going to sneak up on anyone, I saw the talent coming into the season, but you just don't know how it's going to turn out."

Tumwater's Christina Alexander won the 1,600 meters and the high jump and placed third in the 200, helping the T-Birds win 98-43.

In the boys meet, London Vessey, Steven Ocosta, Rand Montermini, Anthony Player and Cameron Phillips were all double winners, helping Tumwater to the 93-48 victory.

Montermini won the high jump with a leap of 6-foot-4 and didn't miss until 6-6. He also won the pole vault at 10 feet.

"We have talent across the board, not in just one or two events," Brown said. "It's got to be a team effort. We get a lot of points from our younger kids."

Alexander pulled ahead early in the 1,600 and won in 5:27. She came back to win the high jump at 4-10. She also placed third in the 200.

"My goal is to get my mile time down to 5 flat," Alexander said. "Running the 200 helps my speed."

Tumwater boys and girls, coming off wins against River Ridge, both improved to 5-0.

"Tumwater has more kids in more places," Black Hills coach Tom St. Clair said. "They're looking like the best team in the league on both sides."

Tumwater was even a little nicked up. Cody Peterson, the state's top freshmen in the 110-hurdles last year, competed only in the triple jump Wednesday because of a hip flexor injury.

"He's not 100 percent," Brown said. "He's running, but just not at 100 percent yet."

Aundreaha Martinez rested a strained quadriceps in her leg and competed in only the 100 and scratched from the 200 and relays. Martinez, who has accepted a soccer scholarship to Northern Colorado, injured her leg in a soccer match on Saturday.

But watching her teammates compete wasn't easy for Martinez.

"I was freaking out during the relays," she said. "It's a lot easier to run than watch."

Brown said his team's strength is in numbers.

"My goal a couple of years ago, when I took the program over, was to get the numbers up," Brown said. "We had the highest number turnout since Black Hills was built and the school split."

Tumwater had 78 turning out.

Pole vaulters go 1-2-3 for Stanwood in win

STANWOOD -- Thanks to a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault, the Stanwood Spartans will enter spring break on a high note.

Nathan Simonds, David Colwell and Jacob Crowfoot went 1-2-3, respectively, leading Stanwood to a narrow Wesco boys track meet victory at Stanwood High School Thursday.

The Spartans finished with 77, six points in front of Marysville-Pilchuck (71). Mariner (33) finished third.

"Going three in a row in the pole vault helped quite a bit," Stanwood assistant coach Jordan Sneva said.

Senior Isaac Teichgrab also had a big day, winning the 400-meter run in 40.52 seconds and anchoring the Spartans 1,600 relay. Teichgrab also finished second in the 100 and third in the long jump.

"It was a good meet to have. Going into spring break with good times, height and distances," Sneva added.

Stanwood sophomore Kale Schmidt added wins in the long jump and 300-hurdles.

Marysville-Pilchuck's Ryan Lamphere was also a two-event winner, capturing the 1,600 and 3,200.

Cascade streaks to second at Cashmere meet

The Cascade boys and girls track teams started the season strong as each earned second place in the opening meet of the season at Cashmere. The meet took place Friday and featured Cascade, Cashmere, Brewster, Liberty Bell, Cle Elum and Entiat.

"I was real happy with the results," said Rob Rosenau, Cascade head coach. "Some of the returning kids had PRs (personal records)."

Senior Boone Davis led the way for the Cascade boys, winning the 200-meter, 400 and long jump. Davis set a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 20-6.

Junior Thomas Steinke won the pole vault and triple jump, setting a personal best in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 38-6 1/2.

For the girls senior Roxanne Reimer led the way winning the discus with a heave of 78-1/2. Sophomore Haley Darlington was second in the long jump and just missed a PR in the 100, with another second place finish. Another sophomore, Kelly Graybeal, was second in the 300 low hurdles and third in the 100 low hurdles.

"We had some fast times for a first meet of the year," he said. "The weather wasn't great. It rained about 45 minutes. I thought the first year kids did real well."

Next up for Cascade, a meet at Oroville Saturday. Other teams competing include Omak, Okanogan, Oroville, Tonasket, Brewster, Liberty Bell and Republic.

Bulldogs hit ground running, win first meet of season

The Cashmere Bulldogs track team endured a bout with nasty weather Saturday to take the opening meet of their 2008 season.

The Bulldogs, who hosted the event, ran away with it, scoring 492 total points to second place Cascade's 200, third place Cle Elum's 129.5, Entiat's 40, Brewster's 95 and Liberty Bell's 34.

"For a first meet, it went pretty well," Bulldogs' head coach Jeff Kenoyer said. "The kids performed well under the conditions."

Under the intermittent rain and persistent wind, the Bulldogs put on a consistent performance, coming in the top spots in most categories.

Cashmere male athletes took first place at 110-meter hurdles, 110 dash, 1,600 run, 4x100 relay, 300 hurdles, 3,200 run, 4x400 relay, pole vault - in the midst of a five-way tie for first place shot put and javelin.

They took second place in the 110 hurdles race, 110 dash, 400 dash, 800 run, 200 dash, 3,200 run, high jump, long jump, javelin and discus.

They took third place in the 400 dash, pole vault, shot put, high jump, long jump, discus and triple jump.

Among the stars of the day were Dillon Miller, winning the 110 hurdles, and the 300 hurdles; Seth Pierson winning the 1,600 and the 3,200 run; John Mitchell, runner-up at the 100 dash and the 200 dash; Cody McIntyre, second in the high jump and the 800 run; Chris Ruether, taking first in the 100 dash, second in the long jump and third in the triple jump; and Rudy Blomquist, taking second at 100 hurdles and third in 300 hurdles.

On the girls' side, Cashmere took first place in the 100 hurdles, 100 dash, 1,600 run, the 4x100 relay, 4x200 relay, 4x400 relay, the pole vault, shot put, high jump, triple jump and javelin. The Bulldogs came in second in the 3,200 run, the 1,600 meters run, the 400 dash, the 200 dash, pole vault, the shot put and the triple jump. Cashmere finished third in the 3,200 run, the 400 dash, the pole vault and the high jump.

Some of the standouts on the girls' side included Emily Abbott, winning the shot put and the javelin; Kaylee Carson winning the triple jump and coming in second at the 200 dash; Ariel Lynch, coming in second at the 1,600 run and third in the 3,200 run; Ashly Down, coming in third in the pole vault and fourth in the triple; jump and Mayra Hurtado, third in the 400 dash and fourth in the 100 dash.

"Even if it had been perfect weather, this is pretty good for such an early meet and the number of practices we had," Kenoyer said.

The next event for the Bulldogs is today in Moses Lake, and then the Ray Cockrum Invitational this Saturday at Wenatchee High.

When it comes to numbers, the Cheney boys’ and girls’ track and field squads are at polar opposites.
The Blackhawks girls return just six seniors, while the boys are deeper at 12. At the other end of the spectrum, nine freshmen will compete for the boys, while the girls field a frosh class of 20.
In between is a mixture of new and returning sophomores and juniors that both head coaches Tom Stralser and Todd Hering say makes for two talented teams – teams that should again factor into the Great Northern League team-title mix.
Both coaches start with the seniors in evaluating their squads. For Stralser, it’s Corinna Bockstruck, a consistent top-three finisher in the distances for last year’s GNL title team. Gen McCormick returns in the jumps with the possibility of setting a new school mark in the triple jump.
Kyle Miller will challenge for top-three spots in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, as well as be a key performer on the 4x400 relay team. Ceri Palk will compete in the throws, coming within six feet of a new personal record in the javelin at the season-opening jamboree last Wednesday, throwing 112 feet under difficult weather conditions.
Rainee Palmer will be a top competitor in the sprints, and Hayley Seipp will team with Bockstruck in the distances.

Okanogan girls claim Oroville track meet title
Nadine Downey and Jennifer Widell each won two events to lead the Okanogan girls' track and field team to a first place finish at the Oroville Invitational in Oroville March 22.
Cascade took the boys' title, edging out Chelan.
Downey won the 100-meter hurdles in 18.82 seconds and took the title in the long jump with a distance of 14 feet, 2 inches.
She also was part of the Bulldogs' 200-meter relay team (Brittnee Grooms, Kelly Downey, Kristen Elsea), which took first place in 1 minute, 54.54 seconds.
Widell took first place in the shot put with a throw of 27-10 and won the discus with a distance of 96-4.
On the boys' side, Okanogan's Jovan Lopez won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.59 and took second in the 300 intermediate hurdles (47.30).
Omak's Karl Schmidt placed well for the Pioneers, taking second place in the triple jump (38-1.50) and third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (48.02).

Beamer breezes to win over Bethel

Virtually everything went right for the Todd Beamer track and field teams in their Wednesday, March 19 meet against the Bethel Braves.

They swept the boys and the girls competitions, and even the weather turned out right.

Clouds, sunbreaks and occasional showers blew over Federal Way Memorial during the meet, but the most ominous storm bringing the most miserable rain did not strike until right at the end of the final event.

Athletes, coaches and fans all cleared out quickly to avoid the downpour, some to stadium offices, some to under the stadium ceilings and most to the team busses and cars.

Both of the Titans' teams improved to 2-0 in South Puget Sound League South Division action with the wins.

Todd Beamer won the boys side of the competition by a 102-30 score as the girls downed the Braves by a 97-44 margin.


The Titan girls team had two double winners.

Irene Devora won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.00 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles won in a time of 49.4. Emma Cortes won the long jump with an effort of 14 feet, 10 1/4 inches and she took the triple jump at 33-6.

Beamer also racked up points by winning two out of three relays. The 400-meter relay won in a time of 52.3 seconds and the 800-meter relay team took first in 1:51.4.

Samantha Mulroy took the pole vault for the Titans at 6-6 and Schneider won the high jump at 4-6.

Cayla Williams won the 3,200-meter run in 13:21.06 and Taylor Kartes won the 1,600 in 5:50.8.

Krystal McCall captured first in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.0, giving Todd Beamer 11 wins compared to five for the Braves.

The Beamer boys team bagged 13 first place finishes compared to three for Bethel.

Todd Beamer was also helped by relay wins, taking the 400 relay in 44.10 and the 1,600 relay in 3:46.2.

Josh Waller won the 100-meter dash in 11.0 and the triple jump at 41-10 and Ryan Eidsmoe took the 1,600 run in 4:36.6 and the 800 in 2:05.1.

Anthony Hogan posted wins in both the 110-meter high hurdles (15.7) and the 300-meter hurdles (42.8).

David Will won the pole vault at a height of 9-6 and Tyrone Faulkner took the 400-meter dash in 54.2. Marty Fuller won the discus at a school record 154-4 and Corey Obungen won the long jump at 18-7. Adam Lee took the 3,200 in 10:33.

Jessica Yates won't let herself forget.

Not after coming up less than two inches short.

Not after having better jumps the previous weeks.

Not after underperforming in the biggest meet of the year.

To remind Snohomish's senior triple-jumper about her runner-up finish at last year's Class 4A state track and field meet in Pasco, Yates printed out the results and posted them in her bedroom next to her mirror. She can't possibly miss them.

"I'm focused on the No. 1 spot," she said. "I'm ready to get first this year and focus all my energy toward that."

After a disappointing second-place finish at state in the triple jump — Stanwood jumper Rachele Kloke's mark of 38 feet bested Yates' 37 feet, 10 ¼ inches — Yates is more motivated than ever and has the talent to be a state champion in multiple events.

The motivation started last May, after Yates jumped well below her capabilities. In the weeks before state, she jumped 38 feet or more three times.

"I have high expectations for myself," said Yates. "When I feel I should be doing better and I'm not, it's really frustrating."

Said Panthers head coach Tuck Gionet: "It was real disappointing for her not to win it. She was really devastated. She felt it was her meet to win. That got her thinking, 'What can I do differently?' "

How about focus solely on track?

Yates, a former three-sport athlete (she plays volleyball in the fall), ditched basketball this school year to put all of her attention on track. She has spent months training and getting in proper track shape.

"When you play basketball, you get in a different type of shape," she said.

The results have been great so far. The 5-11 Washington State recruit had an indoor mark of 39-8 last month in a meet hosted by Washington State, smashing her previous best of 38-10.

"It was a good day, I guess," she said.

Triple jump isn't the only event Yates wants to win at state. She's also a very good long jumper (eighth at state last year, and a season-best of 17-4) and high jumper (best of 5-2). In Snohomish's two meets this season, she has won all three events. She'll even take a shot at javelin sometime soon.

But her focus is the triple jump.

"You could tell off the bat, that'd be her event," said Jerrod Akins, a 13-year assistant track coach who works specifically with the long and triple jumpers. "She has speed and power, two ingredients in triple jump."

Aside from the state championship, Yates wants to hit the 40-foot mark — something only four girls in state history have done. After her remarkable 39-8 last month, it seems possible.

But can she hit 40 when it counts, at the state meet?

"Their athleticism takes them to a point," said Gionet, in his 18th year, "then it becomes the heart and the mental aspects that separates the good ones from the great ones. She has the potential to become a great one. It all depends on how she approaches the season from a maturity standpoint."

Even though it's early in the season, Yates' approach seems very good. She is dedicated to becoming a star jumper.

"I always have a very competitive nature, but this year is over the top," she said. "I'm really focused on what I want."

If the motivation pays off, when Yates looks in the mirror in late May, she won't see a sheet of posted results.

She'll see a state champion.

Class 4A

Alec Fellows, Edmonds-Woodway boys track and field: Alec, a freshman, helped his team beat Shorewood and Lynnwood with victories in the 110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles, high jump and triple jump.


Class 3A

Andrey Levkiv, Hazen boys track and field: Levkiv won the shot put with a state-best mark of 57-1, one of the leading throws in the nation, in a meet against Kennedy.

Kirsten Smith, Everett girls track and field: Smith broke a 27-year-old school record in the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 9 inches.

Class 2A

Christian Stark, Elma boys track and field: Stark won the 100 (11.7), 200 (22.7), 400 (50.7) and 110 high hurdles (15.8) to help beat Hoquiam and Black Hills.

Class 1B

James Lehr, Prescott/Waitsburg boys track and field: Lehr won the shot (44-11) and discus (128-8) to help his team to a victory.

Franklin sprinter off to fast start

At the Tacoma Relays on Saturday, Franklin junior sprinter Ariana Jones ran the 100-meter dash in 12.06 seconds, the fastest time in the state this season. It was the fastest time Jones has posted in almost two years.

After finishing second at state in the 200 as a freshman, she lost all of her sophomore track season when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament during the basketball season.

"She was way ahead of schedule on her rehab most of the time," said Anthony Franklin, Franklin's track and field coach.

Jones returned to the basketball team this season, then went straight into track without any health problems. She has her sights on the 100 and 200 at state this year.

"There's still a lot more to do," her coach said.

WENATCHEE — The stars did what they were supposed to do Saturday at the Ray Cockrum Relays, but it was the fringe athletes that stepped up to carry their respective teams.

When Wenatchee sprinter Wyatt Piro broke her collarbone after falling across the finish line, coming in third in the 100-meter dash, sophomore Kylie Chapman stepped in and anchored the Panthers' 1600-meter relay team that finished in third place.

"She had to run in flat shoes because she didn't have spikes with her," Wenatchee head coach Bob Bullis said. "She did a great job for us."

Bullis was also excited by the performances of freshman Tyler Shales in the 3200-meter relay and sophomore Skye Pauly in the girls 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter relay.

Shales passed two opponents during his leg of the 4x800 relay and ran a solid 400-meter leg of the distance medley relay.

Bullis said Pauly ran well after coming back from an injury. She ran neck-and-neck with teammate Emily Hazen in the open 1600, finishing fourth and fifth with times of 5:37.75 and 5:37.92, respectively. Pauly also ran a split time of 2 minutes, 36 seconds in her 800 leg of the 3200 relay.

Eastmont also had some lesser-known athletes complement its big-time returnees. Devon King elected to turn out for track this spring instead of softball and greatly impressed Wildcats coach Gary Millard in her first real meet of the season.

"She ran a 60-flat (on the Cats' winning 1600-relay team) on what was basically her first time out," Millard said. "That's incredible. It's great having her out for track. It gives up flexibility with who we put in our relay teams."

King also finished second in the triple jump.

The Wildcats were without Washington State-bound sprinter Morgan Clem for the second straight competition, and Millard said it may be until after spring break before Clem will be able to get out on the track. The two-time returning state champion has a small break in her right fibula that did not appear on medical exams until right before the season started, Millard said.

"It could have happened during the winter when she was playing a little indoor soccer, or been a result of soccer during the fall," Millard said. "She went to BioSports during the week and we just think its best not to push it with a talent like that."

Once Clem returns, the already-solid Wildcats sprint corps becomes even more formidable.

Millard also showcased two other track newcomers in the javelin event, which was won by the Wildcats with a combined total of 324 feet, three inches. Inga Kellog is a senior that turned out for track for the first time this year, and junior Ashley Perrow was a state-caliber thrower at Liberty Bell before moving to East Wenatchee this year. Millard already has Brooke Randall atop his javelin rotation, so adding Kellog and Perrow bolsters his lineup quite a bit.

"A few of these girls have friends on the team and just decided to come out this year," Millard said. "We're thrilled to have them."

Wenatchee junior Chaese Sewell had a busy afternoon.

He anchored the Panthers' 400-meter relay team that finished second to Lake Stevens by .12 seconds and made up most of that ground himself in the anchor leg. Sewell placed second in the 200-meter dash in another photo finish, this time coming in just .02 behind Donovan Beath of Eisenhower, in 23.79. In the 800-meter relay, Sewell again ran the anchor leg and cruised across the line to help Wenatchee defeat second-place Lake Stevens by nearly two full seconds. He ran the anchor yet again on the third-place 1600-relay team.

"He's going to be one of the best in the league this year," Bullis said of Sewell. "He had a nice day today. A good conditioning day."

Wenatchee's Spencer Straight and Lake Stevens' Brennan Frost engaged in a scintillating duel in the high jump. After Frost cleared six feet on his first attempt, Straight missed at the same height on his first two attempts before clearing the bar on his third and final try. Once again, Frost cleared 6-2 on his first attempt. Straight could not keep pace and Frost won the competition. Wenatchee's Garrett Smith and Keaton Smith each cleared 5-10.

Straight set a personal-best throw in the javelin with a heave of 177 feet. Teammate Anthony DiTommaso's throw of 164-6 helped the Panthers win the relay title.

"I threw last, so I knew what I had to shoot for," Straight said. "It made it a lot easier."

Wenatchee's Emily Martin won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 49.08, also a personal best time. She improved by over a full second from the Panthers' first meet of the season at Moses Lake on Wednesday, and won by nearly two seconds over Kiana Cheng of Garfield.

Martin finished second in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 16.89, just .08 behind first-place Brittany Tri of Lake Stevens.

Eastmont's Madi Miller continued her solid start to the season with a victory in the discus (107-8) and a second-place finish in the shot put (35-0.5).

Carter Nell began his quest for a return trip to the state tournament in the pole vault with a leap of 13-6 on Saturday. Nell finished third at state in 2007. Teammate Toby Moore finished third with a leap of 12-6.

The Eastmont girls trio of Chelsea Putnam, Courtney Abbott and Jessika Hardgrove took the team title in the long jump with a combined total of 45-2.75 and they finished second, fourth and fifth, respectively.

EAST WENATCHEE — Eastmont's Morgan Clem won two state titles in 2007, taking the 100-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles at Pasco High School over Memorial Day weekend.

Barring something unforeseen, Clem will be back at state again in 2008 to defend those titles, but may bring more of her friends with her.

It will be hard for Eastmont head coach Gary Millard to top a 2007 season that saw all 15 Wildcat state championship participants earn a medal, but there is enough talent on hand to come close. Eastmont's girls finished second in the team standings behind Skyline a year ago.

Clem, who will be attending Washington State University on a track and field scholarship next fall, may be adding the 100-meter hurdles to her repertoire in her senior campaign, and will participate in the 400 and 800-meter relays again this year.

She is that good.

"It's great having her back, obviously," Millard said.

Also returning on the girls side are long jumper Chelsea Putnam (fourth at state), shot-putter Madi Miller (fifth) and Nikki Dotter, who went to state as part of both sprint relay teams.

Brooke Randall threw the javelin 119 feet in the first meet of the young season last Wednesday at Moses Lake, a distance that puts her one foot off the school record with the rest of the season to go.

Millard expects big things from sprinters Courtney Abbott, Jessika Hardgrove and Tori Hartman, as well as pole vaulter Shelby Johnson.

On the boys side, Carter Nell is back with designs on improving on his third-place state tournament finish in the pole vault, when he cleared 14 feet. He won the season opener at Moses Lake with a jump of 13 feet.

"Carter had to wait around for a while before he got on the pole and probably got pretty cold standing around," Millard said.

Sprinter Dan Simmons clocked an electronic 11.52 in the 100-meter dash on Wednesday and a 51.2 split in the 1,600-meter relay, both exceptionally quick times considering the early point in the season and the cold weather in Moses Lake.

Zane Carlson and Christian Eifert are in place as the Cats' top distance runners, and cruised to a 1-2 finish in Moses Lake.

Millard said that while his team's high marks in the season opener are great, it's the postseason that counts.

"Our philosophy is that these early meets aren't real important other than to find out where kids belong," he said. "The league meets are a little more important because there's potentially a league title at stake, but our bigger interest is what's going to happen at the end of the season. We're gearing these kids to be peaking for districts and on."

WENATCHEE — Bob Bullis is a happy man.

After enduring the past few years at the helm of the Wenatchee track and field program with either a strong boys team or girls team — not both — he feels that in 2008 both sides of the Panther program will be solid.

"It's going to be a lot of fun this year," Bullis said. "It's a good group and fun group to work with. I've got a boys team and a girls team this year that should be up there in the top four in the league."

Bullis has 145 kids out for track this spring.

On the girls' side, Bullis saw 2007 two-time state champion Kristen Ballinger shuffle off to Amherst College in Massachusetts this past fall, but said that the team she left behind will be solid if not spectacular.

"We don't have any Kristen Ballingers or Morgan Clems, but we've got six or eight girls who should form a real solid core for us," Bullis said.

Bullis is excited that junior sprinter Wyatt Piro is fully recovered from the injury that stunted her 2007 campaign. Piro began her comeback year with a victory in the 100-meter dash at the season's first meet in Moses Lake on Wednesday.

"We think she'll have a fine year," Bullis said.

Courtney Bratrude returns from a state tournament appearance in the pole vault in 2007 and Bullis expects her to be back in Pasco this May.

Emily Hazen and Hannah Kiser will form the nucleus of the distance team this year, with Hazen also running in the 800 meters.

Both girls run cross country for Susan Valdez, who is assisting Bullis for the first time in track and field this spring.

"We coach really well together and I'm glad to have her aboard," he said.

On the boys' side, senior Spencer Straight is a state-caliber pole vaulter and won the javelin in Moses Lake. Brandon Lynch will lead the Panther throwers and Michael Sauer and Mark Zimmerman will anchor the distance crew.

Bullis is excited about the 400-meter relay team of Blake Helm, Garrett Smith, Kyle Kuntz and Ryan Harmon, who he hopes will be running about 3:20 by the time the postseason comes around.

The Panthers dominated the 300-meter hurdles and were led by Emily Martin's winning time of 50.87 seconds. Wenatchee's Cassie Babcock, Jenny Johnson and Ashley Tonge were second, third and fourth, respectively.

Panther Wyatt Piro posted a time of 13.05 to win the 100-meter dash and jumped 33 feet, 10.5 inches to win the triple jump. She also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team, which posted a time of 52.38.

Emily Hazen (5:40.74) and Skye Pauly (5:46.97) finished first and second in the 1600, Erinn Kuest won the 3200 (13:25.23) and Courtney Bratrude won the pole vault (10 feet) for Wenatchee.

Eastmont came away with six wins, including two from Madi Miller. She had a winning shot put of 36 feet, 1 inch and also took the discus with a throw of 90 feet, 9 inches.

Brooke Randall won the javelin with a throw of 119 feet and Nikki Dotter's time of 2:35.34 was tops in the 800.

The Wildcats also won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

Cashmere's Katelyn Thompson won the 200 and 400 dashes, and fellow Bulldog Paige Castro won the high jump with a mark of 4 feet, 10 inches.

Boys' track

Wenatchee, Eastmont and Cashmere at Moses Lake

The Cashmere runners dominated, with Seth Pierson leading the way with wins in the 800 (2:09.66) and 1600 (4:53.59). Teammates Chris Ruether (11.42 seconds) and John Mitchell (23.95 seconds) added wins in 100 and 200 dashes.

Wenatchee's Chaese Sewell won the 400 (54 seconds) and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team. Garrett Smith, Spencer Straight and Keaton Smith were one-two-three in the high jump, respectively, and Straight had a winning throw of 168 feet, 10 inches in the javelin.

Eastmont was paced by Christian Eifert and Zane Carlson, who finished first and second in the 3200, and Carter Nell, who led a Wildcat sweep of the top four spots in the pole vault.

Grizzly girls, boys sweep to titles

Everything came up roses for homestanding Hoquiam Saturday in the annual Grays Harbor County track and field championship.

The weather was near-perfect, facilitating a spate of new meet records, and for the second straight year the Grizzly boys and girls swept team honors.

The meet was co-sponsored by The Daily World and Anchor Bank.

The Lady Grizzlies dominated, rolling up 200 points which more than doubled the output of runner-up Elma. They collected 11 of the 18 firsts, including 10 of the 11 running events.

The boys competition was a different story. Four points blanketed the first three teams with the Grizzlies’ 152 beans barely enough to edge Elma and Montesano, both with 148. Disqualification of a sprinter due to a false start may well have cost Monte the meet.

For the second straight year, it was Elma’s Christian Stark taking the most individual bows. The Eagle superstar won both sprints and both hurdles, setting three meet standards along the way.

Stark took the high hurdles in 14.9, shaving a tenth off the record he set in 2007. He also smashed the 300 hurdles mark with a 39.7 clocking (he’s the state 2A champ) and zipped the 200 dash in 22.8.

In both sprints he bested Hoquiam’s speedy junior Scott Morrison, winning the 200 by a surprising margin of about eight yards.

Morrison, however, was a decisive winner of the 400.

The only other state champion in the field, Montesano’s Jake Vetter, was another multiple winner.

The Bulldog senior won his specialty, the high jump, at a meet record 6-5 and also copped the triple jump. He barely missed a third gold medal when Hoquiam’s Ben Eaton defended his long jump title at 20-21/2, edging Vetter by three-quarters of an inch.

Vetter took another silver medal behind Stark in the high hurdles.

Elma’s Mike Vest, who ran second in the three distances a year ago, won two of them this time taking the 1600 and 3200.

Montesano’s Jared Larsen ran second to Vest in the 1600 but turned the tables with a win in the 800.

Elma’s Jordan Craig was the other male record-breaker, increasing his own meet javelin standard to 191 feet.

The pole vault was one event not favored by the weather.

The HHS pit is set up to put the prevailing west wind at the vaulters’ back. However, the wind came out of the east yesterday.

Casey McCoy led a 1-2-3 Grizzly sweep at 11-6 with defending champion Izzy Chavez second at 11-0.

Also claiming gold medals were Hoquiam’s Neal Tibbs in the shot and Elma’s Logan Powell in the discus.

Hoquiam and Montesano split the relay titles.

Amanda Berndt led the HHS parade in the girls’ events, winning both sprints and handling two relay legs for a haul of four golds.

Nychele Carley and Carly White bagged three golds each, both winning two individual events, plus one relay.

White bested Aberdeen’s Cortney Thomas in both the 800 and 1600.

Carley won both hurdles with come-from-behind wins over Hoquiam teammates. She overhauled freshman Sara Hoiness in the 100 highs and did the same to Emily Woods in the 300 lows.

HHS freshman Breanne Bitar also bagged three golds and pulled perhaps the day’s major upset. She nipped Elma’s Jade Haas in the long jump by two inches at 16-41/2. And she was in on a couple of relay wins.

Haas did, however, mine some gold in this one, winning the high jump at 5-2. That makes her one of three co-holders of the meet record.

Elma sophomore Brandi Thomas registered a pair of notable wins.

She took the 3200 (becoming the only non-Hoquiam running event winner) in what was her first-ever attempt at the distance. Thomas also bagged a meet record with her 34-113/4 triple jump.

Another sophomore, Hoquiam’s Connie Morgan, claimed two golds and a pair of meet records. She won the 400 in 62.2 and handled a leg of the Grizzlies’ 4x400 relay win.

White, Carley and Woods were the other members of that foursome that got home in a record 4:17.3. The Grizzlies copped all three relays.

North Beach girls prevailed in four field events.

Tashia DeLaCruz successfully defending her discus title. Cheresse Weidman popped the shot a fine 38-71/2; Kina Shriner took the javelin and Elizabeth Thatcher the pole vault.

“I thought we might win it if everything went right,’’ Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan signed off.

For the Grizzlies, they did.
