He is saying that no pole vaulters from UT or Texas State made it to NCAAs this year, but a vaulter from Texas Tech did.

Goosfraba..... :)

YEAH!! i thought this thread was about TEXAS!! not that other school, swt or something?? (jk)

dk is still a good vaulter, for those of you who saw him this year, i think he jumped 5.20 or better in every meet except ncaa's? 5.10? which is an improvement from his frosh and soph years where he was a consistant 4.90-5.0m guy with one big boom at 5.40i... now he's a 5.10-5.20m guy who can hit 5.30 more often... and that's what the dec is all about, getting your consistancy up to higher heights and farther distances. he's becoming a better dec. maybe not a better vaulter, but a more consistant one.

Thanks for the input Trey. I used to watch DK jump when he was in Highschool, and I was very impressed. We knew that kid had serious talent.
Back to the UT vault coach subject.....I remember seeing Brian Hunter fly over 5.70 to win at the 2002 NCAA Champs in Baton Rouge when he was attending UT. Someone must have been telling him something that worked ;)

blakedow wrote:Somebody needs to clarify that decs arent pole vaulters... Pole vaulting is a certain type of crazy that is only exceeded by those in the decathalon... And as you all know, all sprinters, jumpers, and distance runners think the vaulters are crazy, but all the vaulters think that the decs are crazy... So putting pole vaulters and decatheletes in the same category is like putting oil with water... It doesnt mix, and it often threatens the lives of many birds and aquatic animals...

That is one of the funniest posts I have ever read. Respect.

emmm... just to stick my nose in. Bob Phillips deserves way more credit than Dan for Brian Hunter. Hunter went 15'3 in high school. 17' first year, 18' second year, and then 18'4 summer of 2000 (after season) to go to the olympic trials. So 2 more years down at UT got him 4 more inches. Which is still progress, just trying to let people know. Hunter was not a product of Texas, more of a VT export

Let's not split hairs over this issue... Both coaches seemed to do an amazing job with him... 4" is a lot after you have surpassed 18'... What I dont understand is why he would transfer if he was doing so well at VT???

The best thing Dan did was get Hunter not to make dumb mistakes. Like coming in at 5.80 when your PR is 5.51 (I remember seing him do this once....for some reason I think it was '00 NCAAs). For someone with obvious intellegence (dual engineering degree) he made the absolutely worst decisions I've ever seen.

Also, if you saw Hunter's VT technique compared to it under Pfaff, there was no comparision. He may have been the best collegiate technician I've ever seen while he was at UT. At VT, he relied a lot more on pure athletism. He would have jumped 5.80 in college if he wasn't so interested in posing for the camera while going over PR bars.
"You have some interesting coaching theories that seem to have little potential."
