Tendency to sail to the right.

Unread postby JumpinSkiing » Sat Apr 07, 2007 9:46 pm

I'm a right handed vaulter, High School, PR is 12'6" in a meet but poised to easily go 14 this year.

Thing is, I have a tendency to sail to the right on vault, causing me to even make contact with the standard on a few occasions.

My coach thinks the problem is with the way the pole bends, but I know it's with my plant, and I know my hands aren't getting in line with eachother on plant, which is the cause.

Am I right on this? Any drills or anything to help me plant correctly?

It's most likely a problem with your plant; if it's late, then your hands won't be above your head, they'll be to your right, hence the direction that you travel in.

Another possible explanation involves the plant also. If you plant with a "roundhouse" motion, your body compensates by having your plant foot move to the right. This puts you off center from the box and will contribute to traveling to the right. A "roundhouse" plant can also be a cause of not getting the top hand fully above your head (on center), resulting in the same problem as the late plant described above.

A teammate of mine does the same thing. If you have that problem it in your popups and warmups too, simply saying "plant...straight...up," with each word on your 3 last lefts, it actually helps a lot. Just keeps you consciously thinking about the plant.

to dovetail what master is saying if you allow your top hand to drift behind your hip then it is nearly impossible to have a correct plant. If you do that then you have no choice but to bring your top hand out away from your body and around your shoulder to get your top hand above your head. The correct way is to get your top hand in front of your hip before you begin the plant. Then your top hand can come directly up your body and not interfer with your last two steps. If you planted correctly you should be able to hit the bill of a baseball cap with the thumb of the top hand......

i used to do that also 1 thing i know of that will help is make sure you plant in the center of the box because the farther right you plant in the box it will tend to throw you that way
