I believe the map is quite good. I grew up in southern Ohio and almost everyone called it pop. I went to Ohio State University and everyone except the out-of-state students from the Northeast called it pop. I worked in Michigan and almost everyone called it pop. I'm now in eastern upstate NY, and everyone calls it soda. However, when I travel to Buffalo and Rochester, almost everyone calls it pop. When I travel to Syracuse and New England, almost everyone calls it soda. I wonder how people who live on the lines of demarcation, like somewhere between Rochester and Syracuse, communicate when they want a carbonated beverage? They must do a lot of pointing.
