Grip/ getting pole vertical

Unread postby Jungm1420 » Wed Apr 27, 2011 12:32 am

So i am using a 13' pole now and i was woundering. My grip now has been from 10'9 on it to 11'3. I need my standards all the way foward using this pole. I got advice that to get a pokes god naturalnbend u need to bee grippd about 6" to 18" from the top. So my q is. If i raise my grip and am getting more bend will it still be as hard or harder to make it onto the mats or would the extra bend make it easier to get the pole to vertical?

The higher you hold the harder it is to get to the pit. You might bend it more but you'll land in the box and it's hard to vault high with a broken leg. It sounds like you need a shorter pole, otherwise hold lower on that one.

well after todays practice idk. someone came and helped me and my legs were already tired from my weights class so i was running bout 3/4 mayb slower what my usual runway speed is. he had me hold at 11.3 and i made it plenty deep and at 11.6 i still made it on just not quite as far. and today was also cold out and i wasnt running near as fast as usual.

Sounds like your coach made a good decision, having you hold lower when your speed wasn't there.

well thats actually my highest grip so far ive gotten to. but he also changed my grip a little too. he had me widen it more it was just a ft apart but he had me go to 1'3" and he said it would help get more pole bend and it would help with my swing up problem also which in turn made the pole speed faster. in practice today it seemed good. i got my grip up to 11'6 and i was landing in the normal prefered landing zone. so tomoro at the meet it is sposd to be warm which will help.
