I'm considering buying new standards because mine only go from 5'6" to 16", are wobbly and not smooth. I also need a pair of pliers to move & tighten the right side.

Just wondering thoughts on what to look for or where to look regarding standards. I'd prefer something sturdy with a range of 6' to 18'. Thanks.
Oh, and ideas on base pads...

Couple of suggestions.

1 - Try to locate used. Might be able to get better model than you could if buying new.

2- If you buy new, try to see them in action, or talk to someone who has the model you are looking at. We got a set at our local HS (low bid special) and they looked OK in the catalog, but when we got them realized they were a very low end. Difficult to use in every way.

Oh you definitely do not want to get that kind of standard. I've had to deal with them at many facilities and the bases always come off the tracks.

you can always make your own, at my school our standards were broken and they said they weren't going to buy new standards until next year so i welded 2 7' square pipe together to make it 14' tall, made a square base, and then little pegs 6 inches apart all the way up from 7' it was the most ghetto thing i had seen in my life but it was to the point, i also welded a pole stand/bench

The base is really heavy and they move very smoothly. What I really like about them is you can dismantle the whole set up for storage if you use wingnuts instead of the standard nuts that come with it. We have had ours for about 6 years and they are the second best purchase we made.

MY school has those standards (the $734 ones). I'm guessing they're 20-25yrs. old because our mats say, offical sponsor of the 1984 olympics. In the 3 years i've been hear we have left them outside for the indoor and outdoor seasons, but this has only been done for like 5 yrs. Anyway these standards are very heavy. Therefore they would suck to take in and out every day, but don't worry about them moving when you hit the bar werid like other standards. They don't sway very much and are very sturdy. The wheelson the base are going to brake the are held on by axels that are way to thin to support the weight of the standards. but they still work and you can use them without the rules. the standards have a very wide range so if you like praticing kickoffs at like 40in. your good. If your wheels brake and you get frustrated with moving them you can just move the whole base. They are going to rust. This caused the demise of ours. the pins rusted in to the wholes the pins go in so we can take them in our out. So on the one side with the rusted in pin- we hold it up with a stack of brinks. So now our standards move in incraments of 2.5" ot what ever it is the always come out to obscure heights like 12'3.75"

I do like the the incrametns of the standards
7'-8'-9'-10'-10'6"-11'

I think it's ideal

I would buy them again but there are deffiently better standards but these are the bang for you buck kings.
