I hate landing on the pit and having dust and foam attack my eyes.

i hate running down the runway or racing and having particles hit in me in the eye (i.e - a fly got me in the eye one time, either that or a small rock)

its definately a topic to bring up to your coach or a head official in the beginning of the season. i dont think where i am that we can wear them because i always wear them around the meets (because it's so bright) but i don't vault with them on.

One way around the "jewelry" argument is simply to wear clear safety glasses. They are way cheaper and some look pretty sharp, like the S&W's one can get at an equipment rental store. If you point out that they are safety glasses the official would have a hard time calling them jewelry.

eye wear

I searched the NFHS rule book but could not find anything about sunglasses. Checked NFHS web sit and only found something about sunglasses for soccer. I know I've always heard only prescription glasses are allowed, but I can't find it in writting. I'm going to do some checking with some other officials and see what I can find.

I emailed this question to an official who is very "up" on the rules, and his reply was - There is NO restriction to sun glasses as long as they are not offensive or outrageous.

Sounds reasonable to me.

outrageous is a matter of opinion sometimes for vaulters. I have gone through a full practice with one of those Rasta hats with fake dreadlocks.....dont' worry, it wasn't a real practice. Just to keep the hands on the pole.

I wore them a few times last season because of the mat dust... and the pits at my college are awful... one jump and you're getting violated by mat dust.

sucks because my coach won't let me jump with glasses on because he thinks the dust would get trapped in between my eyes and the sunglasses.

I wore sunglasses at duel meets because no one really cared, but for bigger meets, I didn't even ask because I already knew the answer.
