Interested in a pole vault camp in Hawaii?

Unread postby Spencer Chang, MD » Thu Nov 03, 2005 1:49 pm

Aloha to all pole-vaulters and coaches,

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in coming to Hawaii next December (2006) for vacation and a pole vault camp topped off with a competition at the end. It would be held at the University of Hawaii where there is a screaming tail-wind most of the time :) .

If there is enough interest, we could probably bring in some elite pole vaulters as well as coaches.

Interested coaches so far include Brian Yokoyama of Mt. San Antonio College, Pat Licari of the University of Washington, and Alan Launder of Australia. Of course I will be there too (Spencer Chang, University of Hawaii). The number and quality of coaches will also be determined by the number of vaulters we can get at the camp.

Interested elite vaulters have included Brad Walker, Tim Mack, Toby Stevenson, Tye Harvey, Bubba McLean, Russ and Dana Buller and basically just about any elite vaulter (if we can make enough money to send them over). Who knows, perhaps we can make a little elite competition too.

If we get enough interest, (approximately 100 people), we'll set up a hotel vacation package, and do the camp. The more people, the cheaper it will be.

Let me know:

Sounds awesome Spencer. If it's not too cost-prohibitive, I'll be there!

Sounds like fun!

It might take away from those who usually go to Reno if they have limited travel budget and vacation time.

I'm interested, but I seriously doubt I will have the finances to go next year.

Will you have a broad array of poles for athletes to use over on the island? Will you be able to secure reasonable lodging?

I know I could make it at a low cost. Space-Available military flight on a KC-135, sweet talk the loadmaster to load my poles, and stay in billeting at Hickam AFB. Otherwise I couldn't afford such a trip.

I'll have to look into hotel packages. I think you'll have to find your own way here.

Also, Laura, we could set up an orthopaedic rotation for you here if you wish.

Spencer,

I've been looking for an excuse to go to Hawaii for years. One of my best friends from high school lives there. I'm very interested.
