how many warm up jumps

how many warm up jumps

how many warm up jumps do you guys take before a meet... i know at invitationals or cif prelims there can be a lot of jumpers so your warm up is limited. but like during a dual meet where you have a lot time to warm up, how many do you guys take?

between 6 and 11 jumps as you have there sounds like quite a bit. i would say however many makes you feel comfortable, but remember you will want something in the tank when the bar gets up relatively high. also, if there is a particularly large group of vaulters, doing fewer "pop-ups" and perhaps going straight to a full approach is probably in order. also having to move back your run 3 times seems a bit excessive as well

That is a lot of jumps in warmups , considering that your best jumps normally come around the 6-8 jump of the day then you start to fatigue. Taking 6-11 jumps in warmups for me anyways is a waste of energy. you should take a couple of full jumps, just warm up really well and keep your energy up before you are called up. if you are at the meet you obviously know how to vault its a matter of just being prepared and warmed up for the jump. warmed up as in a physical way like body temp up heart rate up, ready to go. Warm up doesnt mean work out 6-11 jumps .

6-11 jumps in warm-ups is hardly a workout or issue for me. I have hardly ever been tired when jumping at the last bar of the day. This number of jumps is when the competition field is small and I can take as much time as I want. If I was forced with time I would do the following:

1 pop-up
1 10 step
2-3 16 step

With that said, normally I do tend to do more than most people. I like to get far enough along in my pole progression so that I I don't have to deal with those transitions when it counts. I don't start at full approach because I hate when people waste jumps running through or doing stay downs. Now if you can do a pop-up or two and then go straight back to full approach and fully invert on one of your biggest poles, more power to ya!

I do a couple pop ups and 2 from my full run, everyone always asks me- are you done?

It depends on if u feel slow that day (don't u hate those days when u feel lathargic) usually i take 2 to 4 Pop Ups, and then maybe 4 Full jumps (if i feel good on my first jump im done)

I only do whats necessary. I dont start until everyone else is out usually, so I have to re-warm up again before i vault anyway. I will do a pop-up or some other drill, than a run through from my full run to check steps, and 1 drill just plating and riding the pole up, 2 if im moving to a new pole. I dont actually swing up or complete a vault until my run through before my opening height

I am a believe that you shouldn't base your expectations of the meet solely on warm-ups, so I personally like to take only one trip down the runway (draw blood is what we call it.) You do it, then it gives you an idea of what is going on with your runway, if I really need to I may take one more, but that is the exception. By doing this, you save energy and keep your demeanor even keeled so you don't get all amped up, or discouraged because you didn't get on your big pole in warm-ups. Plus, it is a huge confidence builder once you do it a few times.

I take 1- run through 1 - just get off the ground and 1 fine tune

That is if everything goes perfectly, I couldnt get off the ground last meet (regionals 2 make it worse) and had to take 6-8 warm up jumps to figure out my step. Needless to say i was tired when I was attempting PR bars

i do short drills less than 60 feet more and full run stuff less.
last meet i did:
3 one arm hangs (35')
3 short pop ups (55')
2 jumps from 9 lefts
2 jumps from 10 lefts...

my advice do what ever it takes to WARM UP, some meets i take 1 full jump in warm up sometimes i take 10, it just depends on what it takes to get "warm"

Chris and I (his coach) learned a valuable lesson during his junior year in high school, you can over warm up and leave your best vaults in the warm up. We made a warm up rule his senior year, when coach said stop, we stopped. Generaly loosened up with some pop ups then checked for the step about 5x more or less.
