Meet Results - how would you make them better?

Unread postby dafox » Sat Dec 18, 2004 2:44 am

I am in the process of writing a web program that parses track results. That said, I would like to make the wheel better, rather than just do what everyone else does.

During track season, I (like lots of you) find myself checking out various meet results. I happen to check the vault more than anything, but I do peruse the sprints and jumps as well on occasion. I haven't seen a 'format' of displaying results that I like yet.

The closest I've found is listing all the events (mens / womens) and having a link to a flat page of that events results. The worst (and most common) is a gigantic page of all the results, and you have to do a Find->Vault to get down to the vault.

So I'm asking those of you who have been on and all over the net...if you could have some sort of functionality to your results, what ideas can you come up with?
Ideas are both for one meet at a time (viewing results of the So and So Invite) as well as viewing results of a large database of meets (kinda like Vaultn Gus' newsletter).

As of now, I have a few ideas, but I want lots more. One good idea is to group results of one meet into similar categories, rather than just list the events by the order they were ran.
Another thing I'm thinkin of is being able to filter out all the marks below a certain mark (say you want to just see girls vaults of 11' or better from ALL the meets in the database).
Also, any 'functionality' ideas would be great. One that I'm thinking of is using tabs and windows to have all the events *right* there. Similar to this idea (check the Demo about 1/2 way down the page http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex17/tabcontent.htm)

Anyhoo, hopefully I can get a bunch of responses on how to do this well from people who are sick of scrolling. :)

Milestat.com has a pretty decent data base, but it cant sort quite as exactly as you would want. You might want to check that out

Wouldnt it be cool if someone programed a fantasy polevault program... hint hint :P

hrmm. fantasy track league would be really cool. I got some other projects on my plate, but I just might try this in the next year or 2

Are you writing something to replace Hy-Tek? Because Hy-Tek is the devil and deserves to die a painful death

well, no. at least, not yet. I've got my own online entries site, and take the results from hytek into my database, then gotta display results (hence my post above).

But I've also entertained the thought of making a product similar to hytek, but not suck nearly as bad. You have no idea how incredibly screwed up Hytek is in its own underlying code. The database it stores everything in is so convoluted, its not even funny :(

I just know that it is a PAIN to work with, and a newer, better program is badly needed.
