"The landing surface measured beyond the back of the standard bases, shall be be a minimum of 19'8" wide."
I keep running into schools with huge pads but there's a gap between the standard bases and the main section of the pit that has to be at least 19' 8" wide. According to the rules last years Arcadia pad was not legal. We just had a meet at Harvard-Westlake High School where they had a huge UCS pit. They had 715V slanted base pads from Gill Athletics that covered the standard bases. The problem was that there was a 24" gap between the back of the standard bases and the main section of the pit that was wider than 19' 8". According to the new rules that pit is not legal. What I did to make that pit legal was to move the bases and pads back to meet the main section of the pit. The standard bases are usually made to go from minus 12" to 30". Since you can only use about 15 of those inches, that gives you about 28" to move the base pads back to meet the main section of the pit that is at least 19' 8" wide. In the rules it does not state how far back the standard bases can be...the rules state only that the standards can't be placed past 80cm.
