Re: Big West Pole Vault Theories?

Don't need no stinkin' theories; I know exactly what the issue is . . . it's the freakin' POLE VAULT!!

I've been beating my head against the PV coaching wall for 20 years now, and every time I think I have an 'aha moment', I am rudely and abusively reminded I understand what makes it tick NOT AT ALL. I have kids who go for HUGE stretches with no discernible improvement despite my most heroic coaching endeavors. Then, when I throw my hands up and give up, a two-foot PR! I had a boy this year who went from 13-7 to 15-3 with very little training and won the state championship. Then I have a girl who steadily improved through very hard work from 10-6 to 11-6, only to forget what she was doing and regress back to the 10-6 jumper at State! It's an

UNKNOWABLE

event to compete or coach in!!!!!!

To elabor my point . . . in the Pole Vault you must consider

1. Where to start your run
2. Where to hit your take-off
3. Where to position the standards
4. Which pole to be on
5. How high to hold on that pole
6. What the wind is doing
7. How fast your run-up is
8. What your body position is at take-off
9. What you do at take-off to correctly bend the pole
10. How you initiate your swing
11. How you rock back
12. How you extend
13. How you pull
14. How you pike
15. How you clear the bar
16. What height to come in at
17. What heights to pass
18. What my opponents are doing
19. What my coach just told me
20. Why did I ever sign up to do this event

Now - add all these on to the things people in other events need to worry about:
how's my training going?
how do I feel today?
how will the weather and venue will affect me?
etc., etc..
