What's your take on multi-eventing?

Unread postby Peepers PV » Sun Feb 29, 2004 1:14 am

I go to a pretty small hs, and my track team's alright. But in order for us to win state, I've had to run 4 events- and will have to for the next two years. I was just wondering if most of the rest of y'all are in the same boat or do you get to concentrate on the vault?

Also, do you think that training for more events takes away from or adds to your vaulting?

I want to vault in college, but I don't know whether I should concentrate on vaulting to get my mark up a bit more, or whether I should keep my other events so a college coach could say that I might be good at multiple events in order to get some scholarship money maybe... What would be the best thing to do?

Thanks- Lori

not sure about this since i go to a school that does not give out athletic scholarships but i think that you would be more likely to get money if you are a stud at multiple events(now remember that a hep or dec is only 1 event for scoring purposes so i mean like if you are really good at say the 100,200, and 400) of course if you would be best at a hep or dec, then maybe that is the way to go.
as far as doing lots of events in high school, just have fun. do what will make you the most happy and what you think will pay off in the future. i was not good enough to score in more than 1 event in the state meet in high school as you seem to be, i was mostly just good in the vault, but my senior year i was one of the faster sprinters on the team so i ran the relays(not 4x4 though ;) ) and actually qualified for state in the 4x1 but i didnt run it there.
some people can handle doing lots of events. of course som combinations are harder than others. vaulting and running the 2 is one thing, vaulting and 5k is another.
one last thing......dont go to a school that offers you a scholarship because they do. go some place where you definately want to spend the next 4 years of your life(and hopefully will allow you to vault high which is what is really important)

I went to a small high school. In WA you can only do 4 events in a meet, and they strongly encouraged us to do 4 events each meet. I always tried to get my butt in the hurdles and long/triple jump, because they would threaten to put me in the 4x400.

Of course I actually ran the 4x4 once... let's just say I ran it slow enough that they never asked me to run it again (I didn't even run that slow on purpose). :dazed:

If you have success in other events, even if you are not good enough to do them in college, it will show college coaches that you have good athleticism, and therefore more potential.

Plus you know what's really cool? When your team wins titles.

My team lost the state meet by a couple points my senior year. If I would have given anything to be helping in more events and scoring more points.

Yea, I am at a pretty small hs too, and we only have about 20 girls on our track team, so I am in 4-5 events (pv, triple/long jump, 4 x 400, 4 x 100, and 100 hurdles) each meet.

I think you should do alot of events Lori. They are good for you. I'll call your coach and tell him to put you in more. LB

Good pole vaulters can also long jump, sprint, and hurdle. Those are the indicators of potential pole vault success.

Two typically. I always do the pole vault...and then one of the following (if they don't intefere or if I'm tired): 200, 4x200

Atleast that's what I've been doing for Indoors...we'll find out about Outdoors once that actually starts moving (first meet March 27th)

my opinion

Its good to do a couple of events, if they don't interfere too much. Since jumping ability and speed are such huge parts of pole vaulting ability it also makes sense to train for those abilities.

in hs i did the 110HH, LJ, HJ, PV, and sometimes the 4x1. I enjoyed it but now i mostly just use some long jumping and hurdling as cross training. never in meets (plus i crash a lot with hurdles)

In HS, I ran the 110 and 300 hurdles, PV, and anchored our 4x1. i did run the 100 a couple of times. I make all my kids do at least one hurdle race and one other running event. All vaulters should run the 300LH, it builds character!
