Lonie was with Redskins in training camp last year
The Green Bay Packers signed punter David Lonie on Friday, PackerReport.com has learned. Lonie was in the Washington Redskins' training camp last season, but was beaten out by incumbent Derrick Frost.
The 6-foot-5, 218-pound Australian-born Lonie averaged better than 41 yards per punt while at the University of California. He attended Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, before going to Cal.
Lonie, who turns 28 on May 6, starred in the pole vault and water polo, worked as a plumber and in construction, and ran a surf shop before he came to the U.S. as a water skiing instructor. He hooked up with former Cincinnati kicker Doug Pelfrey in 2001 to improve his punting skills before going to college.
